Loris Karius will forever be synonymous with the 2018 UEFA Champions League final despite not being a part of the winning team. Early Life and Education

Loris Karius is the child of Christine and Harald Karius. He was born on the 22nd of June, 1993 in Biberach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. As a child, Karius had to decide between becoming a motocross rider as his father intended, or a footballer, as were the wishes of his grandfather. His grandfather, Karl, notably took him to football practice when his parents were working, which further shaped him towards playing football.

A young Karius later enrolled at Pestalozzi-Gymnasium Biberach where he further honed his skills before joining the youth team of FV Biberach in 1998. He spent two years there before switching to SG Mettenberg in 2000 and a year later to SSV Ulm 1846. After five years at the club, Karius transferred to VfB Stuttgart where he caught the attention of the German national youth team coaches and was called up to play for the Under-16 and Under-17 teams.

After an Under-16 game against Azerbaijan in 2009, Loris Karius and his family were invited to England by Manchester City who offered him a contract. He joined the club’s youth team that year but failed to earn a senior team appearance in his two years there, prompting him to return to Germany on loan. The move to Mainz 05 was a year later, in January 2012, made permanent as Karius went on to become the youngest goalkeeper ever to play in the Bundesliga. He set the record in a match against Hannover 96 on the 1st of December, 2012 after he came in as a substitute to replace Christian Wetklo who had been sent off.

Karius made no further appearances that season but went on to become the first-choice goalkeeper a year later.
