Mads Mikkelsen is one of the Danish men rocking Hollywood. A celebrated figure in his country Denmark, Mads has since established himself in Hollywood and the world over. He has featured in French and German films with plans of starring in Bollywood.
The raspy-voiced actor is something of Hollywood’s favorite villain cast having portrayed the villain in a list of films from the 2006 Bond film to Valhalla Rising (2009) and a number of Marvel films.
Mads is quite a versatile actor who doesn’t like to limit himself, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise when he brought his skills to the small screen to play the titular character in the NBC psychological horror-thriller Hannibal which won him a Saturn Award for Best Actor in its first season. The show rounded up in 2015 and Mads has since returned to his mainstay – the big screen. Some of his films since then have included; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Arctic, and Chaos Walking. Let’s talk more about his personal side.
Mads Mikkelsen’s Wife and Children
Mads is a happily married man. As you might have known (if you’re a big Mads fan), Mads originally aspired to become a gymnast but then found himself dancing at a certain ballet academy called Balettakademien in Gothenburg – Sweden’s second-largest city.
What does this have to do with his wife? Well, it was after Mads completed his dance training and started a dancing career that he met a certain choreographer named Hanne Jacobsen who would become his future wife.
Their initial meeting was actually at an audition for a theater play in Aarhus Theatre in 1987. Jacobsen at the time already had years of experience as a dancer. Though they were in a relationship with other people as of when they met, they both found their way into each other’s arms and started dating, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Mads’ wife was born on January 13, 1961, which makes her four years older than Mads who was born on November 22, 1965. Unlike Mads who has a brother, his wife Hanne is an only child.
The couple got married in the year 2000 on December the 2nd and about 5 years after their union, Mads’ career began to move at jet speed. This was about to put a strain on their marriage before Hanne decided to bring an end to her career in 2009 to focus on running her family.
Hanne’s dancing skills saw her appear in a couple of Danish TV shows, including Alletiders Jul (1994), Alletiders Nisse (1995), and Pyrus I alletiders eventyr (2000).
Hanne and Mads share two kids together, they have a son, Carl Jacobsen Mikkelsen born in 1997, and a daughter, Viola Jacobsen Mikkelsen born in 1992.
His Brother – Lars Mikkelsen
Mads Mikkelsen has a brother named Lars Mikkelsen whom he grew up within Nørrebro, Copenhagen, Denmark. Born on May 6th, 1964 Lars is the older one by just one year.
Seeing both brothers active in entertainment, one would be forced to speculate that they got it from their parents, however, none of their parents was ever in entertainment. Their father Henning Mikkelsen was a trade union official and a bank teller while their mother Bente Christiansen was a nurse.
Lars was studying for a biology degree at the University of Copenhagen before his passion for performing forced him to drop out. He then began a career as a street performer miming and juggling. Subsequently, at the age of 27, Lars returned to school, this time to hone his performing skills. He graduated in 1995 and in 1997 he began scoring acting gigs.
Liks his brother Mads, Lars has gone from a Danish star to a Hollywood and an internationally recognized act. He played the primary villain role of Charles Augustus Magnussen in the British TV series Sherlock. American series-lovers would remember him most from his role as the Russian President Viktor Petrov in Netflix’s House of Cards. Lars is married to fellow Danish actress Anette Støvelbæk. They got married in 1989 and share two sons together; Lue and Thor Mikkelsen.
