Malcolm Brogdon might still not have won over a lot of people after he became the first second-round draft pick in more than half a century to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. This is because he managed to do it with the fewest averages in points and minutes per game of any player to have won the coveted award.
Regardless, the Milwaukee point guard, who earned his public policy master’s degree from the University of Virginia as he was also being named ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year, is definitely creating his own lane and is one to be kept an eye on.
Malcolm Brogdon’s Bio
Brogdon was born Malcolm Moses Brogdon on the 11th of December 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the youngest of the three sons of Mitchell Brogdon, a lawyer, and mediator, and Dr. Jann Adams, the associate dean of science and math and former chair of the Psychology Department at Morehouse College.
Due to his family’s strong educational background, Brogdon did not have the luxury of fully exploring his athletic abilities while growing up because he needed to maintain the honor roll. When it eventually became evident that he was blessed with an abundance of talent, Brogdon’s parents made a deal with him to maintain a B average or forget basketball. He did so as he attended Greater Atlanta Christian School where he averaged 25.7 points and 12.9 rebounds in his senior high school year.
For his college career, Brogdon had the opportunity of attending Harvard among many other top colleges but opted to attend the University of Virginia instead. In his freshman year, he averaged 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds. Just before the beginning of his sophomore year, Brogdon broke his left foot so he opted to take a medical redshirt for his sophomore year. When he returned to playing in the 2013-14 season, he averaged 12.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. In the following year, Brogdon increased his points average to 14.0 points as he also managed 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game to earn consensus second-team All-American honors. He was also named to the All-ACC team as well as the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
Going into his senior college playing year, Malcolm Brogdon was named on the Naismith Trophy Watchlist. He went on to average 18.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 37 games to be named the ACC Player of the Year and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year as the school decided to retire his jersey.
NBA Career, Injury, and Stats
Upon graduating college, Malcolm Brogdon was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 36th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. He made his debut in the team’s season opener, announcing himself to the fans with 8 points and 9 assists on the night. On the 31st of December, the rookie recorded his first career triple-double with 15 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds in a game against the Chicago Bulls. A week later, he managed a career-high 22 points against the Washington Wizards.
These performances among others earned him a place on the U.S. Team in the Rising Stars Challenge at the 2017 All-Star weekend. At the end of the season, after averaging 10.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 75 games, he was named the 2016-17 NBA Rookie of the Year as he also garnered a unanimous selection to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
In his second season, Brogdon had hoped to keep up the level of play that was required from a Rookie of the Year award winner but he, however, struggled to do so. This is despite the fact that he managed a career-high 32 points in a game against the Phoenix Suns in January 2018.
A month later, Malcolm Brogdon suffered what was initially thought to be a season-ending injury when he partially tore his left quadriceps tendon. He ended up spending about eight weeks on the sidelines, missing 30 games before returning to action in April. His averages for the season were 13.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 48 games.
