Gladwell was born on the 3rd of September, 1963 in Fareham, Hampshire, England. His full name at birth is Malcolm Timothy Gladwell. He was born to a pair of accomplished individuals. His mother, Joyce Gladwell is a Jamaican psychotherapist and his father is a mathematics professor, Graham Gladwell from Kent, England.

The family lived in rural Canada and at the time he was six, the family moved from Southampton to Elmira, Ontario, Canada. When Gladwell was in high school, he was an athlete involved in middle-distance running and even went on to win the 14-year-old-boys’ 1500 meters title at the 1978 Ontario High School Championships in Kingston, Ontario. He won the championship with a time of 4:05:20.

Gladwell attended the University of Toronto, Trinity College, Toronto, and graduated with a degree in History in 1984. He had also interned with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C in 1982 as well.

He found it hard to be accepted at any advertising agency he applied for after having decided to undertake a career in advertising. He later did accept a post at The American Spectator as a journalist, moving to Indiana.

From 1987 to 1996, Gladwell worked at The Washington Post, covering the areas of science and business for the publication. After he ended his tenure with the capital-based publication, he started out at The New Yorker where he stated that he wanted to “mine current academic research for insights, theories, directions, or inspiration”.

The articles “The Tipping Point” and ‘‘The Coolhunt” which were written by Gladwell in 1996 for The New Yorker brought him some popularity. His recent escapades have seen him co-create the Next Big Idea Club with Susan Cain, Daniel Pink, and Adam Grant. He still writes for The New Yorker.

Aside from his time as a journalist, he is also a recognized and published author with at least five books. His first book, The Tipping Point was published in 2000 and its inspiration came from the sudden drop in crime in New York City. He had written an article by the same name in 1996. His work even went on to have a degree of impact on some of the policies of the NYPD.

After The Tipping Point, the next book to be written by Gladwell was Blink. It was published in 2005. It was an international bestseller with over 2 million copies sold. His third book was Outliers, published in 2008, and then What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures was published on October 20, 2009. It was a book that had a compilation of his favorite articles since he began to work at The New Yorker.
