She is not an only child as she has a brother named Paul Makela. It is of interest to note that her father worked for the Pontiac car factory in Detroit, for four decades. She attended Waterford schools, Waterford, Michigan. After graduating from Waterford Mott High School, she took up a job in the automobile industry in order to pay for her college tuition. Mary Barra would later bag a BSc in electrical engineering from Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute). She also bagged a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1990.
In 2014, she received an honorary degree in the University of Michigan after delivering the Spring commencement address for her Ann Arbor campus in Michigan stadium.
Barra kicked off her career in 1980 with General Motors as a co-op student, her duties then included managing the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant. Through hard work and determination, she began to rise. In 2008, she was elected vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering and later Global Human Resources the following year.
