Mary Berry is a household name when it comes to baking as she is a cake expert who is well celebrated in the United Kingdom. The British veteran has written best-selling cookbooks on food and has her own cookery show on BBC. Although she studied Catering and Institutional Management, cooking comes naturally to her. She has written several articles on magazines, made appearances on TV and received several awards, although her journey to the top has not always been smooth, the veteran cake boss is riding on the wings of success as her hard work has paid off.

Biography

Mary Rosa Berry was born on March 24, 1935, to parents Alleyne and Majorie Berry in Bath, Somerset, England. Her father was the mayor of Bath in 1952. She attended Bath High school and also graduated with a degree in Institutional Management and Catering from Bath College of Domestic Science. She attended Le Cordon Bleu School in France.

She got her first job in Bath at Bath Electricity Board showroom where she paid home visits to new customers to teach them how to use the electric oven they purchased. She began to write her first book when she became a recipe tester for PR firm Benson’s. She has cooked for several food organizations like the Egg Council and the Flour Advisory Board.

Mary worked as a food editor of Housewife Magazine in 1966, and she only took a five-week leave when she gave birth to her children. Between 1970 and 1973, she became a food editor for Ideal Home magazine after publishing her cookbook in 1970. She landed a job as a judge on BBC One’s The Great Bake Off in 2010 and also hosted her own food show, Mary Berry Cooks. She became the first president of the new Bath Spa University Alumni Association in December 2012 and she has made several appearances in other TV Food shows.

She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2012 for her services to Food Arts. Bath Spa University awarded her in July 2012, an honorary degree for her Lifelong achievements in her career. She also received numerous national awards including the award for best TV judge at the National Television Awards in January 2017.

Mary Berry is reportedly worth $15 million which is an estimation based on her appearances on TV and her books. She has written over seventy cookbooks and has sold over 5 million copies and her books have reportedly have earned her £2.3 million.

Mary and her daughter partnered together to launch a product, Mary Berry’s Salad Dressings, and Sauces. Her range of salad cream can be found in stores like Tesco, Harrods and Fortnum & Mason all over Britain, Ireland, and Germany. Her business had over £1 million in cash assets. She later sold her product company for £2.5 million.

Mary got married to Paul Hunnings in 1966, according to her; Paul Hunnings had to propose thrice before she finally accepted him. Her husband is a retired antique bookseller and the two have been happily married since then.

The couple has three children; Thomas Alleyne March, Annabel Mary March and second son, Williams John March, who died in 1989 in a car crash with his sister, Annabel. Annabel, however, survived unhurt. Mary is also a lovely grandmother to her grandchildren.
