Matt Smith is an English-born film, television, and stage actor. He began his career as a stage actor in the early 2000s and after a few years, he branched into television and film. Matthew Robert Smith was born in Northampton, England on 28 October 1982. His parents are David and Lynne Smith and he was raised alongside one sibling, a sister named Laura Jayne. He schooled at Northampton School for Boys where he displayed a spectacular talent in football. He played for the youth teams of a number of professional football clubs with the hope of eventually pursuing a football career. However, he was forced to quit the sport owing to a severe back injury.
Smith decided to give acting a shot following intense persuasion from his drama teacher. He received early training at the prestigious National Youth Theatre in London where he took part in several plays. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled at the University of East Anglia where he studied drama and creative writing. He got his first on-screen roles in the BBC telefilms The Ruby in the Smoke (2006) and The Shadow in the North (2007).
