Matthew Robert Smith was born in Northampton, England on 28 October 1982. His parents are David and Lynne Smith and he was raised alongside one sibling, a sister named Laura Jayne. He schooled at Northampton School for Boys where he displayed a spectacular talent in football. He played for the youth teams of a number of professional football clubs with the hope of eventually pursuing a football career. However, he was forced to quit the sport owing to a severe back injury.
Smith decided to give acting a shot following intense persuasion from his drama teacher. He received early training at the prestigious National Youth Theatre in London where he took part in several plays.
