Welsh actor Matthew Rhys fell in love with acting at the age of 17 following his role as Elvis Presley in a school musical. Afterward, he applied to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and was accepted. It didn’t take long for him to be awarded the Patricia Rothermere Scholarship in 1993.

He made the most of his time at RADA, appearing in the BBC police series Back-Up and also in House of America. Born as Matthew Rhys Evans on 8 November 1974, the Welsh actor is professionally known as Matthew Rhys. He was born in Cardiff, Wales to father, Glyn, a headmaster and mother, Helen Evans, a teacher. Rhys had a normal childhood while growing up in Cardiff where he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art with his older sister, Rachel who is also a TV personality, working as a BBC broadcast journalist.

After participating in a school musical, playing the role of Elvis Presley, Rhys caught the acting bug and quickly applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and was accepted. He was also awarded the Patricia Rothermere Scholarship in 1993. Rhys’ acting career started in 1997 with his performance in a stage production of Cardiff East. Subsequently, he starred in several other movies without as much as taking a break. In 1998, Rhys went to New Zealand to star in Greenstone, a colonial costume drama for television after which he landed a role in Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange.

Rhys later returned to Wales and did two consecutive films with Jonathan Pryce – The Testimony of Taliesin Jones as well as Sara Sugarman’s comedy Very Annie Mary.

The 2000s were also kind to Rhys career as he continued to play major roles including in a drama series for Granada TV, Metropolis. One of his prominent roles is The Americans, a 1980s Cold War drama series which premiered in January 2013. He stars opposite Keri Russell whom he’s in a romantic relationship with.
