As a teenage African boy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 80’s when he arrived, Blackson found himself to be the butt of jokes of his classmates because he was African and spoke differently. One of those people he told a joke to was an acting coach at the Philadelphia Community College who encouraged him to take up acting classes as he pursued a career in comedy.

His big break came after one of those shows which had Ice Cube in attendance. The former rapper turned actor and movie producer was in the audience and witnessed one of Blackson’s performances with his usual African attire.
