The second trailer for Roland Emmerich’s new movie, Midway, was released this September and it is safe to say that the director outdid himself on this one. Of course, it remains to be seen if the film itself will live up to the expectations the trailers – especially the second one – make us have but they say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The cinematography alone is award-worthy, the acting is sure to be on point since the cast is packed full of stars who know what they are doing in front of a camera, and who are directed by Emmerich too. 1. It Is Based on the Battle Of Midway
The upcoming epic film is written by Wes Tooke based on one of the most important battles fought by the Allied Forces in the Pacific theatre during the Second World War, the Battle of Midway. It has been decades since the Americans had to defend Midway and save face after the gruesome attack that took their intelligence by surprise barely six months before. Roland Emmerich brings back both the Navy of Imperial Japan and the Fleet of American Navy as we all get to see the bravery, intelligence, perseverance as well as the losses experienced by the heroes of the Island Battle and that of World War II.
2. Who Is In The Film?
Like we mentioned earlier, the ensemble cast of the upcoming film is very well chosen considering the importance of the event the movie is based on. The likes of Ed Skrein, Etsushi Toyokawa, Woody Harrelson, Jun Kunimura, Luke Evans, and Patrick Wilson portray the character of the men that took the forefront of the battle. The film also features other stars including Nick Jones, Aaron Eckhart, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Jake Weber, Tadanobu Asano, Alexander Ludwig, Darren Criss, Luke Kleintank, and Keean Johnson, among others.
Toyokawa and Harrelson will be portraying the Commanders-in-chief of the Japanese forces and the American fleet respectively, Kunimura would be playing the role of the Japanese Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, while Skrein was cast to portray the bomber pilot Lieutenant Dick Best.
3. Midway Has Been In The Making For Nearly 20 Years
The director has been trying to make this movie for almost two decades now but for one or two reasons, it had to be delayed until now, which is probably for the best. Maybe the other average movies that have been made in that period with a similar theme would have probably never been made, saving us all the time and energy wasted on them, but on the bright side, now we have something to compare the upcoming movie to.
Emmerich came close to making the film in 2001 but Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor was released before that could happen. Here we are today, hoping Midway fares better than the former.
4. The Movie Trailer
Among other facts about the upcoming Midway, movie is that it has two trailers. While the first was released on the 27th of June 2019, the second and final one came following on September 12, 2019. The second trailer starts by bringing back the fateful December attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese and the devastating effect it had on the intelligence unit of the American Military.
However, their failure to predict the attack inspires them to keep studying the Antagonist’s next move and they successfully figured out that their next attack would be on Midway Atoll, a small northwestern Hawaiian Island under America’s territory which served as an outpost to Pearl Harbor.
Legendary commander, Admiral Chester Nimitz (portrayed by Harrelson) then brings on the action by saying America will throw a punch so the enemies can know what it feels like to be hit.
5. Filming And Release Date
The movie was filmed in two locations, mainly at the Joint Base of the Naval-Air force in Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Honolulu, Hawaii with some scenes shot in Montreal, Canada. The filming started on September 5, 2018, and concluded on December 12 of the same year.
In preparation for the release of the film, different marketing strategies have been employed, including the release of a teaser poster, a set of still pictures, in addition to the first and second trailers as well as the theatrical poster that followed in September 2019. Nevertheless, the film proper is not going to be released until the weekend preceding Veteran’s Day, November 8, 2019.
