When the Despicable Me franchise began in 2010, there were a lot of things to love, but somewhere at the top of the list are the minions who appeared as supporting characters. Obviously breakthrough characters, they went on to have their own spinoff in 2015 as The Minions. The film grossed more than $1.1 billion worldwide making it better than all the films in the main franchise as well as one of the highest-grossing films ever. Unarguably, one of the main highlights of the film apart from its good storyline and great animation is the Minions cast members behind the funny characters. But who are they?
Famous Actors Who Are Members of Minions Cast
1. Pierre Coffin – Minions
Of the Minions cast members, one can argue that there is hardly anyone who has had as much fun voicing a character than Coffin who voiced the title characters. The French voice actor played the same role he did in the Despicable Me franchise – Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2.
Needless to say, he voiced for the trio of Bob, Stuart, Kevin, as well as all other Minions.
2. Sandra Bullock – Scarlet Overkill
The Academy Awards winning actress stands as the voice behind the female supervillain in the film, Scarlet Overkill. Her role in the work earned her a People’s Choice Awards nomination for favorite movie animated voice.
This is one of the few voice roles to her name including her role as Miriam in The Prince of Egypt and Golda Meir in the documentary The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers.
17 years since she was last involved in an animated film before The Minions, Bullock revealed she took the role mainly because she wanted to do something for her son.
3. Jon Hamm – Herb Overkill
The role of Scarlet’s husband and accomplice was played by Hamm. This time around, the Mad Men actor sounds rather different from most of the voices he has done in the past. But that is one of the things that has also made it a great work.
Unlike Bullock, Jon has voiced for many more films and TV shows including Shrek Forever After in which he voiced for Brogan and Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp in which he voiced for Falcon.
4. Steve Carell – Young Gru
Although he only made a cameo appearance in the film, it is very much worth it to have Steve Carell take the role of Young Gru the supervillain. The brief appearance of Gru was to steal the Imperial State Crown from the Overkills again.
Carell has already cemented his place in the Despicable Me franchise and then its spinoff, having appeared in the first film of the series as well as the second and third.
5. Michael Keaton – Walter Nelson
Walter is another interesting Minions cast member who played as the leader of the Nelson family – a family of criminals. He is a character voiced by Michael Keaton.
6. Allison Janney – Madge Nelson
Award-winning actress, has had more than her fair share of voice roles in the past on both TV and films. In this animated film, she plays the role of Madge Nelson, the wife of Walter.
7. Jennifer Saunders – Queen Elizabeth II
The character of Queen Elizabeth II was voiced by the British comedian and actress, Jennifer Saunders. Although she has not had many voice roles to her name, the actress delivered on this role. She voiced Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2 and Nana Noodleman in Sing.
Other Members of Minions Cast
Others who have also been involved in the very successful animated film are the German voice actor Erich Räuker, Geoffrey Rush, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Ohad Shachar all of whom are narrators.
That said, Geoffrey Rush is the main narrator of the film. One of the few people to net the Triple Crown of Acting, Rush’s unique voice has made him a great narrator in a good number of other productions which he has handled successfully and with the Minions, he maintains that prowess.
Apart from the famous actors and actresses who have taken the major roles in the animated series, there are a good number of others who have offered their voices for different minor roles in the film.
