Mitch Moreland is a professional baseball first baseman who currently plays for the Boston Red Sox. Mitch has been playing baseball since high school and would later attend Mississippi State University where he continued playing college baseball for the Mississippi State Bulldogs before he was drafted by the Rangers in the seventeenth round of the 2007 MLB draft. Mitch Moreland’s Bio

Mitch was born as Mitchell Austin Moreland to Charles and Angie Moreland on the 6th of September 1985. He was raised in Amory, Mississippi, the same place he was born. Mitch is one of his parents’ two children. He has a sister named Mallory.

He began playing baseball since his days at Amory High School. In 2004, he won the Louisville Slugger All-American after making a 7–1 win-loss record with 0.53 ERA as a senior and also batting .456, striking out just thrice. Derek Norris was on his high school baseball team. After high school, Moreland played college baseball for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. As a junior, he hit .343 with 10 home runs and a 3.46 ERA.

Professional Career

During the 2007 Major League Baseball draft the Texas Rangers selected Mitch Moreland in the 17th round and started off his career in the minor league with the short-season Spokane Indians of the Northwest League. At the end of his first season, he batted .259 with twenty-eight hits, 2 home runs, 7 doubles, 1 triple, and fifteen RBIs.

He started off the following season with the Class-A Clinton LumberKings of the Midwest League, hitting .324 with thirty-seven doubles, 4 triples, eighteen home runs, ninety-nine RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He would later be named to the Mid-Season Midwest League All-Star Team as well as the Post-Season Midwest League All-Star Team in that same year.

During the 2009 season, Moreland played in two separate categories of the Rangers’ franchise; he started the season with the Class-A Advanced Bakersfield Blaze and ended with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders. While at Bakersfield Blaze, he recorded .341 hits with nineteen doubles, 8 home runs, and twenty-six RBIs, and with the RoughRiders, he batted .326, nineteen doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, and fifty-nine RBIs.

He was later assigned to the Arizona Fall League at the end of the season and played for the Surprise Rafters. In that same season, the Texas Rangers named Mitch the “Tom Grieve Minor League Player of the Year.

In 2010, he was invited to the spring training. He played with the Oklahoma City RedHawks (AAA) until July 29 when he was called up by the Rangers to replace Ian Kinsler, who on the disabled list. With the RedHawks, Mitch Moreland batted an average of .289. He played a total of forty-seven games in the regular season, batting .255 with twenty-five RBIs and 9 home runs.

Moreland ended the 2011 season batting .259 with sixteen home runs and fifty-one RBIs in one hundred and thirty-four games. In that year, the Rangers appeared at the World Series for the second consecutive time and Moreland recorded one home run during a Series game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Mitch Moreland would remain with the Rangers till the end of the 2016 season. That season, he played one hundred and forty-seven games, batted .233, with twenty-two home runs and sixty RBIs. He also won his first Gold Glove Award that year. In Mitch’s seven seasons with the team, he played a total of seven hundred and seventy-three games, batted an average of .254 with one hundred and ten home runs and three hundred and fifty-four RBIs.

He signed a one year deal with the Boston Red Sox in December 2016. During the 2017 regular season, he played one hundred and forty-nine games as the team’s first baseman, batting .246 with twenty-two home runs and seventy-nine RBIs. During the postseason, he played all 4 games at the  ALDS, batting 5-for-13 (.385). In December, he signed a 2-year contract with the team.

In May 2018, he was named to the MLB All-Star Game as an American League reserve first baseman. Although he struggled offensively after the All-Star break Mitch Moreland ended the season batting .191 with four home runs in forty-seven games.

In December 2017. he signed a 2-year contract extension with the Boston Red Sox worth $13 million. His base salary for earn a base salary of 2018 is $6.5 million.
