Born on 15th June 1973 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised in Ruidoso town, New Mexico, Neil attended La Cueva High School in Albuquerque from which he graduated in 1991 with honors. He started his film career as a child actor when the playwright Mark Medoff discovered him at a drama camp in Las Cruces, New Mexico. His first appearance on screen was in the 1988 drama Clara’s Heart alongside Hollywood actress Whoopi Goldberg. The movie earned the young actor a Golden Globe nomination. He also landed a role in the movie Purple People Eater that same year.
His character as a teenage surgeon in Doogie Houser, M.D between 1989 to 1993 boosted his career as a child actor.
