Nick was born on March 22, 1995, in Seattle, Washington, the United States as Nicholas John Robinson to Michael Robinson and Denise Podnar the oldest of five siblings. He also has two older half-siblings from his father’s previous marriage. As a young 9-year old, his parents realized he had a unique ability for theatre and got him admitted in a neighborhood theater group for kids called Broadway Boun. He graduated from Campbell Hall School in 2013. Nick was accepted into New York University in 2013 shortly after his High School graduation, however, he opted to defer his first year in other to work on Melissa & Joey.
Nick Robinson’s Acting Career
At the age of 11, Nick featured in a theatrical adaptation of the novel A Christmas Carol penned by Charles Dickens. After his impressive performances, a family friend who was also present suggested to his parents that Nick should meet with legendary Hollywood talent scout, Matt Casella. If there was anybody to give a verdict on Nick’s abilities, it was Matt. He has an impressive track record of spotting talent, discerning which new kid on the block had the required qualities to go the long haul in Hollywood.
Matt’s verdict was straightforward. Nick had star quality. Not just his skill, he was impressed by his manners and charismatic demeanor. He recommended him to a few agencies and eventually Nick signed with The Savage Agency in Los Angeles. His signing with the agency coincided with the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike and as a result, he had to return to Washington with his parents where he continued to perform in gigs around DC. In 2009 he auditioned for a television show and was asked to play the role of Ryder Scanlon on the ABC Family sitcom, Melissa & Joey. He starred as the nephew of Melissa Joan Hart’s character.
In 2011 he began filming the Disney Channel original movie Frenemies for which he was cast with fellow Disney Stars Zendaya and Bella Thorne. He was then cast in the lead role in the film The Kings of Summer in 2012. For HBO’s third season of Boardwalk Empire, he was Rowland Smith, a young thief who stole Nucky Thompson’s underground liquor shipments. He was cast in Jurassic World, the fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise which was ultimately released in 2015.
In 2013 Nick Robinson won nominations for the film The Kings of Summer in the category Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role. He played the character of Ben Parish in the 2016 movie 5th Wave, based on a novel of the same name. He played the lead role in the movie Being Charlie that was screened for the first time in ‘The Toronto International Film Festival 2015’ and was released commercially in May the next year.
