Patrice Bergeron is a professional ice-hockey player who plies his trade with the National Hockey League side the Boston Bruins. The talented player got drafted by the Bruins back in 2003 and has remained with the team ever since. Among other highlights of his illustrious career is the 2011 Stanley Cup victory with the Bruins.

On the international front, Bergeron represents the Canadian national men’s ice hockey team. He won gold with the team at the 2004 World Championships, 2005 World Junior Championships, 2010 Winter Olympics, and 2014 Winter Olympics. The veteran NHL star became the 26th member of the Triple Gold Club in June 2011 having won an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship gold medal, and the Stanley Cup.

Patrice Bergeron-Cleary was born on July 24, 1985, in the city of L’Ancienne-Lorette, in Central Quebec, Canada. His parents are Sylvie Bergeron and Gerard Cleary and he was raised alongside one sibling, an older brother named Guillaume.

Unlike the passionate player he has now become, Bergeron had a rather slow start to the game of hockey when he was a child. However, with a lot of patience from his parents, he eventually caught the bug and there has been no turning back for the talented player ever since. He schooled at Seminaire Saint-Francois, a co-ed private high school located in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures in Quebec, and in his senior year, he was named the captain of the school’s Seminaire Blizzard Midget AAA hockey team.

Professional Career

As an amateur, Patrice Bergeron played for several teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the 2nd round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft as the 45th overall pick marking the beginning of his long-running professional career.

As a rookie, Bergeron was selected for the 2004 NHL YoungStars Game. He ultimately finished the season with 39 points in 71 games. For the 2005-06 NHL season, the Bruins’ team was built around Bergeron, and living up to expectations, he finished the season with team-bests and career-highs of 31 goals and 73 points. The talented player continued in his sublime form during the 2006–07 campaign finishing with 22 goals and 48 assists.

Bergeron’s run in the 2007-08 season came to an end in October 2008 when he suffered a season-ending head injury. Nearly one year later, he returned to action in time for the 2008-09 season. He recorded 39 points in 64 appearances for the season. His performance upped to 52 points in 73 appearances for the 2009-10 season in addition to 11 points in 14 games at the 2010 playoffs.

For obvious reasons, the 2010-11 season is the most memorable season of Patrice Bergeron’s professional career. He tallied 57 points in 80 games for the regular season and he also contributed to the Bruins’ victorious outing in the 2011 NHL playoffs. He scored the championship-winning goal in game 7 of the series which gave the Bruin’s their 6th Stanley Cup.

Bergeron put up a good show in the 2011-12 season finishing with 64 points in 81 games. Despite the Boston Bruin’s early exit at the 2012 NHL Playoffs, he was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward for the 2011-12 season. In the lockout-shortened 2012-13 NHL season, he tallied 32 points in 42 games. He also led the Bruins to the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals though they eventually lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in 6 games.

In the 2013-14 season, Patrick Bergeron recorded 30 goals and 62 points which helped the Bruins win the 2014 Presidents’ Trophy. His performance earned him the Frank J. Selke Trophy, for the second time in his career and he also won the NHL Foundation Player Award. The talented player has remained consistent and has continued to churn out impressive numbers for the Bruins over the years. He won a third and fourth Frank J. Selke Trophy in the 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons respectively.

Patrice Bergeron has remained with the Boston Bruins since getting drafted by the team back in 2003. The veteran NHL player is expected to remain with the team till 2021 having signed an 8-year/$55 million contract extension back in 2013. According to his current contract, he is billed to earn a whopping $6,875,000 for the 2018-19 season including a base salary of $875,000 and a signing bonus of $6 million.
