Peta has a younger brother, Rob who also works in the Australian Army as a truck driver. Their parents separated in 1982.

She later studied acting in Los Angeles for five years from 1991 at the Actors Circle Theatre with Arthur Mendoza. After her studies, she had small roles in such indie films as Naked Jane and Loser.
