He was born to a Jewish Capitol Hill staffer father and a public-school teacher mother who raised him alongside his siblings in Maryland where he attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School before moving to the University of Maryland for a degree.

Peter’s love for Hip-hop was sparked by his older brother who also loved the music genre. He was also inspired by the early 1990s hip hop song like that of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s second single Parents Just Don’t Understand from their second album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper.

Being more passionate about the music genre, Peter got himself engaged in several underground hip-hop programs. Within a short while, he was already a part of the station’s best-listened program called The Hot 97 Morning Show, airing from 5 am to 10 am and featuring old and new artists and their music.

Peter, alongside Cipha Sounds (also known as Luis Diaz) and the African-American DJ K. Foxx, hosted the program, and the three were called the Black, the Rican, and the Jew—sometimes shortened to Black Rican Jew with Peter being the “Jew”.

The success of the program led to Peter’s hosting of his own show named Real Late With Rosenberg on the same radio station.
