Cook was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on the 4th of October 1979 to a cooking instructor and weaver named Jo Ann and her husband Thomas H. Cook, who is a social worker and former stand-up comedian. She attended Clara Barton Open School, Laurel Springs School, and then Minneapolis South High School.

Career

Rachael Leigh began appearing on the big screens quite early. At the age of seven, she was featured in a public service announcement for foster care; at age ten, she started working as a child print model, appearing on advertisements for Target and on the boxes of Milk-Bone dog biscuits. At the age of fourteen, she began auditioning for acting roles and at the age of sixteen, Cook landed her first role as Mary Anne Spier in a 1995 comedy drama The Baby-Sitters Club.

In 1996, through the help of her modeling agency, she starred in 26 Summer Street – a short film directed by Steve Larson. The following year, she starred as a fifteen-year-old rape victim who is impregnated by her rapist in the made-for-TV crime drama film Country Justice. In 1999, Rachael Leigh Cook recorded a major breakthrough in her career after playing Laney Boggs in the teen romantic comedy She’s All That.
