Upon graduation, Rachel Nichols began her journalism career with Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel in 1995. Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel is the main daily newspaper of Fort Lauderdale, United States. There she worked as a reporter for one year; leaving the newspaper agency the following year, Nichols joined The Washington Post where she started working as a reporter for the Washington-based news agency until 2004.

Looking for a more challenging environment, Rachel Nichols joined ESPN in February 2004. Working as a New York City-based reporter, she covered breaking news stories and major events in the city; she also did a bit of investigative journalism as well as human-interest features for the network.
