Ricky has been a true fan of the R&B music genre right from a young age and his fascination for the music genre led to forming a music group called ‘Ricky and Ralph’ with his friend Ralph Tresvant (AKA Rizz or Rizzo). Gradually, the exceptional skill of the duo in the music world led to the expansion of the group to what is now known as the “New Edition” with the likes of Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and Bobby Brown joining the group. The group officially began in 1983 and has strived as one of the most popular music groups in the country for over three decades. The group replaced Bobby Brown who left in the mid-80s with Johnny Gill (AKA J.G., J. Skillz, or Johnny G,) who is now the sixth and final member of the New Edition group. The group recorded the Heartbreak album which became the biggest pop hit with the Top Five smash Cool It Now. New Edition’s album Home Again was released in 1996, followed by their studio album, One Love which was released in 2004.
Ricky later formed a band with Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe as BBD which later became one of the most popular acts of the ’90s and the pioneer of what became known as the “New Jack Swing” sound. The new group helped to expose his skills as a lead singer, unlike in the New Edition where he basically was a backup vocalist. The group released its first album Poison in 1990 and their second album, Hootie Back, was released three years after. Next on the line is BBD, released in 2001.
