Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is renowned for the blockbuster epic film Gladiator released in 2000 and has starred in numerous movies that have been box office hits over the past years that have earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Russell Crowe Bio & Career

The talented actor was born April 7, 1964, in Wellington, Strathmore Park, New Zealand to parents Jocelyn Yvonne and John Alexander Crowe. He is said to have moved with his parents to Australia at age 4 and as their work was as caterers on film sets, Crowe spent most of his early childhood days on film sets with his parents. At age 6, he landed his first acting role in the sitcom Spyforce and made an appearance in the series The Young Doctors.  In 1978, he returned to New Zealand with his family and was enrolled in Mount Roskill Grammar School but drooped out at age 16 in the bid to pursue his performing career.

In the 1980s, Crowe concentrated on building his music career in New Zealand where he used the stage name “Russ Le Roq” to perform.  He is known to have released singles like  “I Just Want To Be Like Marlon Brando”, “Pier 13” and “Shattered Glass. He later returned to Australia with intentions to enroll in the National Institute of Dramatic Art but was advised not to but rather to seek roles in films since he already has a knowledge of acting. He landed his first professional role in 1986 in The Rocky Horror Show the New Zealand version directed by Daniel Abineri. He was also cast in the film Blood Brothers in 1988 and the next year, he appeared as Johnny, in the musical stage play Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom.

Other remarkable Australian productions of the actor include The Crossing released in 1990, Blood Oath in 1990 also known as Prisoners of the SunPolice Rescue in 1992, Romper Stomper in which he starred alongside Jacqueline McKenzie and landed the Best Actor Award from the Australian Film Institute (AFI). He was also in the film Proof for which he won Best Supporting Actor.

As his fame increased Crowe was noticed by American filmmakers and in 1995, he appeared in his first American movie titled The Quick and the Dead alongside Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman and Leonardo DiCaprio. In the same year, he landed the role SID 6.7 in the film Virtuosity alongside Denzel Washington and the lead in the romantic film Rough Magic which also starred Bridget Fonda. In 1997, he co-starred with Salma Hayek in the film Breaking Up and appeared in L.A. Confidential in which he was cast as Bud White a ruthless cop starring alongside Kevin Spacey and Kim Basinger.
The New Zealand actor had his breakthrough in the Hollywood industry in 2000 with the movie Gladiator in which he played the role of a Roman General that was captured as a slave co-starring 
Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Ridley Scott. The film was a great success as it landed 12 Academy Award nominations and earned Crowe an Oscar award. 
In 2015, the actor directed his first film titled The Water Diviner in which he was also featured. Other films he has appeared in include:  Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Cinderella Man, American Gangster, State of Play, Robin Hood, Les Misérables, Man of Steel, and Noah to name a few.

The actor is said to have been in on and off romance with the Australian musician Danielle Spencer since 1989 and finally the knot on April 7th, 2003 which also happened to be Crowe’s birthday. The couple has two sons named Charles Spencer Crowe and Tennyson Spencer Crowe. However, in October 2012, the pair separated and after 5 years, they finalized their divorce arrangement in 2017.

The divorce settlement was definitely not a cheap one as Danielle is said to have gotten ownership of their Rose Bay mansion in Sydney which cost about $11 million in addition to $20 million cash.

The latest news about their divorce is Crowe’s auction sale scheduled to be held on their wedding anniversary that is April 7, 2018. The actor plans to sell off more than 200 valuable items he owns in what he calls ‘The Art of Divorce’.
