When his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1995, life took a hard turn for the family. Her condition worsened in 1998 after she broke 12 of her vertebrae after an accident with a water scooter. The trauma she suffered accelerated the course of the disease, which now began to affect her ability to perform her daily activities.

Ryan, who was still a teenager during this difficult time, needed to grow up quickly and take responsibility for himself and his brother as he did more housework and was tasked with cooking dinner. His love for baseball grew even more as he found peace in the game.

Zimmerman played high school baseball for Kellam High School and other summer and fall leagues. He played mostly for the Tidewater Orioles, who had future big-league stars like David Wright and B.J. Upton. He later received a partial scholarship to study at the University of Virginia and play for the Virginia Cavaliers baseball team after impressing their coach during the 2002 Commonwealth games.

The school coaches transformed Ryan Zimmerman into a third baseman, a position he had never played in before. He started and played a total of 174 games. College awards he won along the way include 2005 All-American from Baseball America, 2005 All-American from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and the 2005 All-ACC selection. He was also named 2005 Player of the Year by Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID).

Zimmerman qualified as a junior for the 2005 MLB Draft and was then selected by the Washington Nationals with the fourth overall selection. After a stint with the Savannah Sand Gnats, the Nationals’ minor league A side, and then with the Harrisburg Senators, Zimmerman was called up to the Major League when the roster was expanded in September 2005. Since then, he has played with the team to this day.
