Saoirse Ronan is an Irish and American actress. She rose to prominence as a young actress with her role in the 2007 film, Atonement. Since then, she has not looked back but is only waxing stronger in her career. She has become a three-time Academy Award nominee following her recent nomination for her role in Lady Bird.

Born as Saoirse (which means freedom in traditional Irish and pronounced Sir-shuh) Una Ronan, she is the only child of her Irish parents, Monica (nee Brennan) and Paul Ronan, an Irish actor. Her parents are both Dublin, Ireland natives. Saoirse Ronan greeted mother earth with her first cries on 12 April 1994 in The Bronx, New York. The star holds dual citizenship in Irish and America.

She is from a family of actors with a mother who acted as a child and a father who trained as an actor after he worked in construction and as a bartender. She identified with her roots at 3 when her family moved to Dublin, Ireland, and settled briefly in County Carlow. In her teens, they moved to Howth where she would later buy a home in 2013.

She attended a local school but was later home-schooled by a private tutor. Saoirse lives in Greystones, County Wicklow, Ireland.

Career

Her father would always take his little girl to rehearsals where she got enthralled by the acting world and would become a sensation there in the future.

Fast forward to that future, she made her acting debut in 2003 with the Irish medical drama series, The Clinic and in feature films in 2007 with a part in I Could Never Be Your Woman. That same year, she would appear in a supporting role as Briony Tallis in the film, The Atonement. It became her breakthrough, making her prominent and earning her her first Oscar nomination in 2008 at the age of 13. She also won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

The young starlet became the next big thing and appeared in a number of films taking up challenging roles different from her preceding ones. Some of her films include The Lovely Bones (2009) where she played the role of a murdered girl seeking vengeance, in Hanna (2011) she played a teenage assassin, Byzantium (2012), she portrayed a vampire and in 2014, she played a chef in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

For her lead role in the 2015 film, Brooklyn, Saoirse scored her second Academy Award nomination. She made her Broadway debut as Abigail Williams in The Crucible (2016). Soaring in her career, she landed the lead role in Greta Gerwig‘s film Lady Bird where she played a high school senior. This role led her to host Saturday Night Live for the first time and got her a third Oscar nomination.

She became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2010 as well as an ambassador for the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
