Sean Robert Doolittle was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on September 26, 1986. His father is an Airforce veteran while his cousin Jimmy Doolittle is a pilot, best known for the Doolittle Raid of Japan during the Second World War. Sean was raised in Tabernacle Township New Jersey where he attended Shawne High School. He started playing baseball right from a tender age and he participated in the International Youth Baseball league called The Babe Ruth Baseball. While at Shawnee, Dolittle excelled as a pitcher, thus breaking the state record for most strikeouts in a game. He also led Shawnee to a state championship.

Upon graduation, Doolittle enrolled at the University of Virginia where he played as a first baseman and starting pitcher. He set a record for most wins in a career which was later surpassed by Danny Hultzen. He joined the United States National Collegiate Baseball team in 2005 after which he led the team to win the gold medal at the World University Championship held in Havana in 2006.

During the 2009 season, Doolittle recorded an outstanding season finishing 10th in the Oakland’s farm system. He later sustained knee injuries which ruled him out for the rest of the 2010 season. Doolittle returned in the 2011 season and was converted to a pitcher. He played his first league game as a pitcher in Arizona that year.
