Senator Ben Sasse has thrust himself in the limelight of US politics by positioning himself as a foremost critic of the Donald Trump administration even though he is a Republican. Having not supported Trump in the primaries leading to the 2016 US general elections, he has since criticized the policies of the government especially on Russia and Vladimir Putin, immigration, and the likes.

Senator Ben Sasse’s Bio

Ben Sasse first greeted mother earth on the 22nd of February 1972 when he was born as Benjamin Eric Sasse to the family of Gary Lynn and Linda Sasse in Plainview, Nebraska, a state in the US. His father worked two jobs to be able to provide for his family as a high-school teacher and a football coach.

He has a long list of academic qualifications which all started with him receiving his high school education at Fremont Senior High School, Fremont, Nebraska. He graduated in 1990 as the best student of his class after which he enrolled at Havard University. With leadership in his sights, he majored in government and obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1994.

Of course, his thirst for more knowledge was not filled and so it led him to further his academic pursuits as he enrolled into the Graduate Institute at St. John’s College where he acquired a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. Senator Ben Sasse also attended Yale University for a doctorate degree in history, a Master of Arts, and a Master of Philosophy in the same institution.

Other Endeavors

Before Ben became Senator Ben Sasse, he pursued a career in management consulting as soon as he left college. He began his career with Boston Consulting Group as an associate consultant in September 1994. After working with the consulting firm for a little over a year, Ben joined a Christian organization dubbed Christians United for Reformation (CURE) and he was made executive director after they merged with the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals (ACE).

Moving on from that, the up and coming politician was appointed to the position of chief of staff for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy where he served between 2004-2005 after which he also worked with the Republican member representing Nebraska, Congressman Jeff Fortenberry also as chief of staff even though it lasted just 6 months in 2005 (January-July) as he got another job with the US Department of Homeland Security in Washington DC as a consultant on National Security issues.

Meanwhile, Ben Sasse had a job at the University of Texas as a part-time professor but later turned full-time between September 2005 and December 2006 before he worked with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a consultant. He would later serve as assistant secretary in a unit of the HHS after he was nominated by the then US President George W. Bush and was confirmed by the US Senate.

He served as president of the Midland University (formerly Midland Lutheran College) after he was appointed in October 2009. He was the 15th president of the institution as his tenure has been described as a huge success. Senator Ben Sasse is also an author with two powerful books to his name: The Vanishing American Adult (2017) and Them: Why We Hate Each Other – and How to Heal (2018).

Political Career

In October 2013, Ben Sasse indicated an interest in running for the Nebraska US Senate seat. The seat was going to be vacant the following year as Republican Senator Mike Johanns, who was in the Senate at the time had announced that he was not going to seek re-election into the Senate. Sasse’s announcement was very well received in his state and his fundraising was a success as the amount received set the record for the most amount raised from individual donors in the state.

He would ride on such goodwill and get his party nomination with a landslide victory over other experienced politicians. That propelled him to the general elections on November 4, 2014, where he also defeated the candidate from the Democratic party, David Domina winning with a resounding 64.4% of the total votes cast.
