Sharyn Alfonsi – Bio
Born Sharyn Elizabeth Alfonsi, the renowned journalist made her arrival on the 3rd day of June 1971, in Mississippi, the United States. There is no information available regarding her early life or family background. Moreover, it seems that Alfonsi is comfortable with promoting only her career rather than her personal life. Neither the names of her parents nor her siblings, if she has any is known. It is however known that she’s of white ethnicity and holds an American nationality.
After her high school education at McLean, Virginia, she enrolled in the University of Mississippi, Oxford, where she graduated in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in Political Science and Journalism Studies.
Her Career
Upon completing her studies, Alfonsi started her professional broadcast journalism career, first at KHBS-TV, Fort Smith, Arkansas. There, she had quite a full hand; she worked as a news reporter, editor, weekend weather anchor, and photographer as well. In 1995, she joined WVEC-TV in Norfolk, Virginia as a general assignment reporter until 1997.
Then, she moved to Washington in 1998 where she worked as a reporter and substitute anchor for KIRO-TV. During that time, she covered the World Trade Organization riots. She left the network in 2000 and pitched her tent in Boston with the CBS-owned station, WBZ-TV until 2003.
Her career took another turn when in July 2004, she was named a network correspondent for CBS News in New York. There, she anchored the evening news, covering both domestic and international stories such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the conflict in Israel, Hurricane Katrina, and the Sago Mine Disaster in West Virginia. Also, she was a freelance correspondent for the CBS Evening News weekend edition, Up to the Minute, and CBS Newspath. She left the network in 2006 but not without being featured on CBS’ Public Eye Blog in August, one month before her departure.
Alfonsi joined ABC News in January 2008 as a New York-based correspondent for World News and Good Morning America. In the five years she spent therein, she was a regular on all of the network’s platforms. Together with another ABC Correspondent, David Muir, Sharyn Alfonsi hosted the Made in America franchise for the network. During her first stint at CBS, Alfonsi was dubbed by one of her colleagues, Bob Schieffer, as a true treasure of the network. In 2012, she returned to her treasure base, CBS News.
This time, she joined the cast of 60 Minutes Sports. On March 1, 2015, she debuted on 60 Minutes with a piece, The Storm After the Storm. The segment investigates the fraudulent engineering reports after Hurricane Sandy. It led to a congressional investigation, in turn, earning her a Writers Guild Award for Best News – Analysis, Feature or Commentary – Television. She became a regular in the 2016-2017 season during which she featured in several stories that received huge acclaim, as well as national attention. They include the misuse of jailhouse informants in Orange County, California which drew national attention to a criminal justice system scandal.
She has also done several sports profiles on stars such as golfer Bubba Watson and the poignant portrait of Harry Parker. Currently, in her fifth season with 60 Minutes, she continues to bang on stories that always have her viewers wanting more.
On the 2018 season premiere of the program, Sharyn Alfonsi was featured in a revealing interview with a Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney, which amassed over 13 million viewers. Also in the same season, she reported from Midway Island, with an in-depth look at the problem of plastics in the ocean. In the segment, she reported that much of the plastic in the United States is never recycled.
Sharyn Alfonsi is not just a journalist but a public speaker as well. She gave the opening address at the Meek School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi in May 2013 and her speech gained the attention of NPR who dubbed it as one of The Best Commencement Speeches Ever.
Husband (Matt Eby)
She is enjoying marital bliss with her husband, Matt Eby. The duo has been married for over one decade and is parents to two lovely children; a son named Wyatt and a daughter known as Flynn. She lives with her family in Austin, Texas.
Her husband co-founded Tengram Capital Partners, a consumer private equity firm in 2010. He is also a managing partner at the firm. Prior to that, he served as the Chief Investment Officer of JAWS Estates Capital, the Private Family Investment Office of Barry Sternlicht, and the Sternlicht family. He was also an associate in Morgan Stanley following his graduation from Harvard Business School in 2002.
As is apparently her culture, Sharyn Alfonsi has chosen to shroud in mystery, her wedding date, location, as well as other details of her nuptials.
