Born in a Christian home, Carl served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) for two years before attending Idaho State University. However, he dropped out of his studies to become self-employed. As someone with a burning desire to pursue a career as a social media personality, Carl worked toward that goal, but first, he had to take some menial jobs like bus driving to earn a living, and when he became financially stable, he bought a Dell laptop and found himself in the world of YouTube videos, thanks to his friends who encouraged him because of his comedy skills.

Shay Carl Career History

Carl’s first channel, “shaycarl”, was launched in December 2006. During his first appearance on the YouTube channel, the comedian uploaded funny videos mainly about himself and his family members. Occasionally, Carl involves his listeners in a one-on-one conversation in which he also includes an actual event from his life. Most of his conversations with his listeners focused on weight loss and other important topics. Within six months of vlogging, Carl began receiving a payment of approximately $2,000 per month with over 1.6 million listeners.

On October 1, 2008, he launched another channel called “SHAYTARDS”. The name of the new YouTube channel was coined by Carl during a video stream in which his fans called themselves “shaytarded”. Carl’s popularity continued to grow after a YouTube personality, Philip DeFranco, watched one of his videos and gave him an outcry. Carl’s second channel, where a video was posted every day, grew faster and higher than the first, reaching a total subscriber base of over 4.9 million people. One of the main reasons Carl reached such a large audience in such a short period of time was that he liked to share the experience and intimacy of his family with his audience, although this also caused some controversy as some of his viewers were against using his family for commercial and financial gain and felt that his actions needed to be legally and ethically reviewed.

In November 2009, Carl launched his third YouTube channel called ShayLoss, which focused primarily on weight loss, exercise, and nutrition. The channel also contained some of Carl’s inspiring and encouraging words on topics such as a healthy lifestyle. His focus on weight loss may have been inspired by his weight gain of over 280 pounds after his marriage. After rigorous exercise, he was able to return to 180 pounds and leads his audience through his challenge of weight loss. Carl is currently even doing the 5-week challenge with his brother Logan on his ShayLoss channel.

 Net Worth

As a successful owner of three YouTube channels, each of which is independently producing great performances, Shay Carl Butler is undoubtedly one of the richest YouTube channels of his time. The YouTube personality is believed to have a net worth of $25 million. Carl confirmed his enormous income from the YouTube business and said in an interview with Fobes in 2011 that he was happy to make more money than ever before with something he actually loved.

After generating enormous revenues with his YouTube channel, Carl sold his production company Maker Studios, which he had founded with his family in 2009 after moving to Los Angeles. The company was successfully founded together with friends and colleagues from YouTubers such as Philip DeFranco, Lisa and Ben Donovan, Dan Zappin, and Kassem Gharaibeh, and its program is divided into four networks: “Men”, “Women”, “Family” and “Entertainment”. Carl later sold the company to the Walt Disney Company for 500 million dollars on March 24, 2014. To date, his YouTube channel Shaytards has over 4.9 million subscribers and over 2.6 billion views. Shay announced in 2016 that he would take a one-year break from vlogging. He returned in 2017, however.
