Sig Hansen is a fisherman by profession and a co-owner and captain of the Northwestern fishing vessel. He found fame on the long-running Discovery Channel documentary series Deadliest Catch and has featured in the series since its debut season. In addition to his starring role, he also doubles as the technical advisor of the production. Beyond his flourishing fishing business, Hansen is also an author, a voice actor and a reality TV star.

Who Is Sig Hansen? Bio & Age

This celebrity fisherman was born Sigurd Jonny Hansen on April 28, 1966, in Seattle, Washington. He was named Sigurd after his grandfather. He is of Norwegian descent and is very fluent in the language. He is the oldest of his parents’ three children and he grew up alongside his two younger brothers, Norman and Edgar. Born into a long lineage of fishermen, Hansen’s father and grandfather are credited to have invented opilio crab fishing in Alaska.

He got involved in the family business when he was just a little boy serving as a deckhand on his father’s boat. He eventually began fishing in his early teenage years and worked his way through the ranks of the fishing business. He attended Shorewood High School in Shoreline, Washington and he is reported to have skipped school on several occasions so he could go fishing. He became a full-time fisherman after graduating from high school and he began fishing all year round. He spends up to 10 months fishing in Alaska and the Bering Sea and he also spends a few summers fishing in Norway.

Sig Hansen began serving as a relief skipper on the F/V Northwestern vessel at the age of 22 and at age 24, he became the full-time captain of the vessel. He has an excellent track record since he began running the Northwestern several decades ago. The boat has been highly productive in terms of output and has maintained a superb safety record. The injury rate has declined significantly over the years and there has been no single death at sea since Hansen began running the vessel.

Hansen attained celebrity status when he got featured on the Deadliest Catch documentary television series which premiered on the Discovery Channel in 2005. The show features real-life occurrences on fishing vessels on the perilous Bering Sea across the different fishing seasons. Hansen’s Northwestern vessel won the titles for both the highest poundage caught and the highest money earned during the first 2 seasons of the show and this made him a favorite among the viewers.

Sig Hansen’s net worth is estimated to be about $3 Million. As expected, the bulk of his wealth comes from his illustrious fishing business which he has dedicated his entire life to. However, he has also been involved in several other ventures. He is an author having published his first book North By Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters in March 2010. Also an actor, Hansen had a voice role in the Disney animated comedy film Cars 2 (2011) in which he voiced a boat character named Crabby. He also featured in season 14 of Donald Trump’s reality game show The Celebrity Apprentice.

Family Life: Wife and Daughters

June Hansen is the wife of Deadliest Catch star, Sig Hansen. Details about their union are not particularly known to the public though she has been featured a few times on the Deadliest Catch TV series. The couple has two adopted daughter Nina and Mandy. Sig Hansen also has a biological daughter, Melissa, from his previous marriage to Lisa Eckstrom.

Sig Hansen’s daughter Mandy joined the family fishing business when she turned 18 becoming the first female to join the crew on her father’s vessel. She has been married since 2017 to Clark Pederson.

 

Is Sig Hansen Dead?

Sig Hansen is very much alive and well. He suffered a heart attack on his boat in March 2016 which was shown on Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch. However, he recovered in time for the show’s subsequent season. Starring on the series also poses a lot of risks as the cast has suffered multiple fatalities over the years. Hansen also suffered another heart attack in 2018 which he also survived.
