Silas Weir Mitchell is an American actor who is known for playing mostly volatile characters. Silas Weir Mitchell – Bio, Age
He was born Silas Weir Mitchell Neilson on 30th September 1969 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is one of the five children (three girls and two boys) born to his stockbroker father and homemaker mother and he was raised in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, just a little distance from his birthplace. His passion for the stage and screen was firmly posited in him after he participated in a production of Hansel and Gretel in third grade.
When the time came for him to acquire formal education, Silas Weir enrolled at The Montgomery Country Day School, formerly in Gladwyne PA for his elementary school before proceeding to a college-preparatory boarding school, St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he graduated from in 1987. Four years later, he became a graduate of Brown University, Rhode Island, where he majored in Theatre and Religion. Following his graduation, he acted in minor theatre productions for some time in New York City after which he left to further his studies.
He pitched his tent with the University of California San Diego where he enrolled in their Master of Fine Arts program, graduating in 1995. Therein, he wrote a Masters’s thesis titled What We Make Is Not Ours. Then, the time came for him to fully embark on his acting sojourn.
Silas Weir Mitchell has steady work from television appearances in the 90s albeit in minor roles. Some of his earlier appearances include Silk Stalkings, The Big Easy, Quicksilver Highway, ER, Vengeance Unlimited, The X-Files, Inferno, and The Pretender.
Then in early 2000, he had recurring roles in series such as The Practice, Nash Bridges, and 24. However, his specialty seems to be playing wild-eyed, deranged characters as seen in his recurring roles in My Name Is Earl (2005-2008) as Earl’s ex-con friend Donny Jones, and Prison Break (2005-2007) as Charles “Haywire” Patoshik also starring Wentworth Miller. He auditioned to play Nick Vera on Cold Case (2003) but was eventually cast in his forte as the mentally unstable recurring character James Hogan which remains one of his most notable roles.
His other TV credits include CSI: Miami (2004), CSI: NY (2005; with Vanessa Ferlito), Law & Order: SVU (2009), Burn Notice (2008), Dexter (2007; with JoBeth Williams), Monk (2006). In 2008, he also made an appearance in the seventh and final season of the U.S. cop show The Shield, and the following year, he starred in Fox TV show Mental, The Good Guys in 2010, and The Mentalist in 2011.
Mitchell has also starred in numerous films such as Howard Stern‘s Private Parts and Julian Po in 1997, The Patriot (1998), Absence of the Good (1999), Rat Race (2001), The Whole Ten Yards (2004) as Yermo co-starring Matthew Perry, Flags of Our Fathers (2006), The Gray Man (2007) as Albert Fish, Jr., Halloween 2 (2009), and Heaven’s Rain (2010).
While Silas Weir has racked up a lot of outstanding works in his over two decades career, he got his biggest acclaim as a sensitive and cultured lycanthrope Monroe in the NBC TV series Grimm. From 2011 to 2017, he provided the series with both comic relief and romance.
The Grimm star is successful as regards his career and has also proven so in keeping his personal life low-key. While he and his on-screen wife, Rosalee (Bree Turner) on the NBC hit show, Grimm was our favorite Wesen couple and also appear to be good friends beyond the screen, that is all there is to their relationship.
Who then is his wife? The actor is married to KK Dodds who has been seen in his company a number of times on various events. Dodds is an actress known as Simkins on Spider-Man and Susan Hollander in Prison Break. Though he may not be outspoken about his wife nor even shared about his married life on social media (he’s not active there anyway), the two are really close.
He has two cats and a blue Doberman named Atticus which he considers part of their family.
