So Yeon Ryu is a South Korean Professional Golfer associated with the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour as well as the LPGA of Korea Tour. She came into the limelight following her first major victory in the US Women’s Open in 2011. So Yeon Ryu’s Bio
The unique golfer was born as Ryu So-Yeon in South Korea on June 29, 1990. She was raised in Seoul along with her younger sister So-Myung. Apparently, there is no information about her early life, parents, and childhood. Ryu developed an interest in the game from her second grade as part of her extracurricular activities. Prior to that, Ryu was into music and was a violin enthusiast. At the age of seventeen, she became a professional golfer and began to compete at the LPGA Tours in Korea. She completed her education at Yonsei University, where she studied sports business and obtained her bachelor’s degree in 2013. While at the university, Ryu was also a full-time competitor on the LPGA Tour.
So Yeon Ryu was one of the three female golfers who represented South Korea at the 2006 Asian Games. After putting up an outstanding performance, Ryu won an individual gold medal and also helped her team to win the gold. She dominated the game with 29 under par total and nine-shot victory. The following year, Ryu propelled the Korean team to a 20 stroke victory at the Queen Sirikit Cup. She also won individual titles with a 12 under par total ahead of her opponent Hye Yong Choi.
Ryu made her professional debut towards the end of 2007 and recorded her first professional win at the American Cactus Tour in February 2008. She also joined the LPGA of Korea where she participated in the Sports Seoul Open winning the first event. In 2009, Ryu finished second at the ANZ Ladies Masters.
Additionally, she topped the Doosan Match Play Championship beating her arch-rival Yong Choi the same year. She participated in China Ladies Open in 2010 where she made almost $400 million, finishing fourth on the money list.
During the 2011 season, Ryu finished at the second position in the KLPGA and also emerged the winner at the Lotte Cantata Open. Later in the same year, she participated in the US Women Open held in Colorado Springs in July 2011. Following her impressive performance, Ryu beat her Korean counterpart Hee Kyung Seo to win the tournament making her the third-youngest woman to win tournament others are Inbee Park and Se Ri Pak. Furthermore, Ryu became the second Korean after Jiyai Shin to win membership on the LPGA Tour.
So Yeon Ryu won the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year honors in 2012. The following year, she became runner-up at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship as well as Kraft Nabisco Championship. Her career rise came to a peak in 2017 when she won the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award, ranking second in GIR and also defeating Lexi Thompson to win the ANA Inspiration.
