A phenomenal basketball player and an even more excellent basketball coach, Steve Kerr is the current head coach of the Golden State Warriors, an American professional basketball team based in the city of Oakland, California.
Steve Kerr has a FIBA World Championship gold medal to his name. He also has a good number of records set and broken both as a player and as a manager. There is no doubt that Steve is arguably one of the best NBA players-turned-coach in recent years.
Steve Kerr NBA Career
Steve Kerr began his NBA career at the Phoenix Suns in 1988. He played for them for about a year before he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1989. He would spend 3 seasons at the Cavaliers before joining the Orlando Magic basketball team based in Florida. Kerr spent a year (1992-1993) at Orlando Magic before moving on to the Chicago Bulls in 1993, where he played alongside the legendary Michael Jordan. Steve was with the Chicago Bull for 6 seasons, he was a key member of the Bulls team. During his time, the team set an NBA record of 72–10 in the 1995-1996 NBA season en route to winning the 1996 NBA Finals. They would go on to win the 1997 NBA finals with Kerr scoring the match-winning point at the buzzer.
Kerr parted ways with Chicago Bulls in 1999 and would go on to enjoy two successful spells with the San Antonio Spurs (1999-2001 and 2002-2003), winning two NBA finals in the process. In between those spells, Kerr spent a season (2001-2002) with the Portland Trail Blazers. Steve Kerr as a Coach
As a coach, Kerr has had an equally amazing career. He was named the head coach of the Golden State Warriors on the 14th of May 2014. With a string of phenomenal wins, it didn’t take long for him to start breaking and setting new records with the Warriors. Kerr broke the NBA record for the most regular-season wins for a rookie coach. He had a series of wins that culminated with the win against the Dallas Mavericks. Steve Kerr also became the first rookie coach to win an NBA Final since Pat Riley in 1982 after leading the Golden State Warriors to win the 2015 NBA trophy.
In 2016, the Golden State Warriors broke the record for the most wins in an NBA season en route to the NBA finals. They eventually lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers after a spectacular performance from Cleveland’s LeBron James. However, Kerr’s Golden State Warriors, led by Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, redeemed themselves in the 2017 NBA Finals against the same opposition. Kerr has also been the President of Basketball Operations and General Manager of the Phoenix Suns. He was also a color commentator for the NBA on TNT.
Steve Kerr was born on the 27th of September 1965 to Malcolm H. Kerr (father) and Ann Zwicker (mother) in Beirut, Lebanon. Malcolm and Ann had three other children. Kerr’s grandfather (Stanley Kerr) had settled in Beirut and raised his family there. His grandfather was involved in the heroic rescuing of women and orphans in Aleppo and Marash while working with the American humanitarian organization, Near East Relief. The organization was formed after the Armenian and Assyrian genocides.
Malcolm (Steve’s father) was a University lecturer who specialized in Middle East Academics. Like his father, rather than return to America, he decided to raise his own family in Beirut; explaining why Steve was born there. Invariably, Steve had to spend much of his childhood in Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East, attending their schools. He, however, attended the Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles.
On the 18th of January 1984, tragedy struck. Steve’s father, the then-president of the American University in Beirut was shot dead by gunmen (who were later identified to be Islamic Jihadists) in the hallway by his office. The gruesome murder of his father left Steve traumatized. However, he found solace in his family and basketball. Steve Kerr went on to have a fantastic college basketball season that year. In 1988, he eventually graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelors’s degree in General Studies.
Wife, Son, Daughter
Steve is married to Margot Kerr since 1990. They are blessed with three wonderful children-two sons Nick and Matthew as well as a daughter named Maddy. Nick and Maddy inherited their father’s predilection for sports. Nick played college basketball at San Diego University and is currently a video assistant in the coaching staff of San Antonio Spurs. He hopes to be a coach one day like his father.
Maddy, on the other hand, is an excellent volleyball player. She was one of the best at her high school (Torry Pines High School in Southern California). Maddy has won 2 San Diego Section Division I championships. She also made the “Fab 50” selection by Volleyball Magazine. Maddy was ranked no. 65 by Prepvolleyball.com and has also tried out for the American female volleyball team.
As an athlete, Steve Kerr has an impressive bodybuild. He stands tall at 1.91m.
Facts About His Health

This affected his coaching in 2017 as he had to miss some games. However, Kerr is now back to full recovery and is doing well.
