Steven Culp – Biography
Steven Culp was born on December 3, 1955, in La Jolla, San Diego, California, in the United States of America as Steven Bradley Culp. Steven was born into a middle-class family. His father, Bryan Harvey, was a naval officer, while his mother was Mary-Ann Joseph. His biological parents divorced when Steven was very young and his father moved with him from San Diego to Virginia with his two sisters.
Steven’s mother, Mary-Ann, later remarried a naval officer, John Raymond Grabinsky, just like his father. He also has two half-sisters – Kathryn Harvey and Shelly Grabinsky. Unfortunately, on New Year’s Day 2006, Steven’s half-sister, Kathryn Harvey, was brutally murdered in her home by unknown assailants. Kathryn’s two daughters – Stella and Ruby and her husband Bryan – were also murdered on the same day.
Steven graduated from First Colonial High School in Virginia, while at school he was voted the “most talented” student. He was then accepted into the College of William and Mary and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1978; on the advice of his college professors, he continued his studies in the United Kingdom at the University of Exeter. As he had not yet completed his academic career, he enrolled for his master’s degree at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, USA.
Steven has appeared in 18 feature films and has starred in well over 70 television series, all in a career spanning nearly four decades. He began his career as Tom Nelson in the television series Another World in 1982, and has also starred in the very popular television series JAG (Special Agent Clayton Webb), The Orville as Wilks, Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Parker, and the popular Desperate Housewives as Rex Van de Kamp.
Culp has also appeared in very popular movies such as The Last Word, where he played the role of Sam Seaman, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Star Trek Nemesis, and Jason Goes to Hell, where he played the role of Robert Campbell. Steven has twice, in 2005 and 2006, won the Screen Actor’s Guild award for “Best Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble”.
Steven Culp’s past relationships were not made public, but as of today, he is happily married. Sometime in 1987, while filming on the set of “Gore Vidal’s Lincoln” in Richmond, Virginia in the United States, he met Barbara Ayers, who was one of the costume designers on the set. They became friends and went out together shortly after their first meeting.
A few years later, Steven proposed to Barbara and she accepted his proposal. They finally got married on September 29, 1990, and since then they have been happily married and managed to stay scandal-free. Due to the nature of their busy career, Steven and Barbara decided not to have children until the time when their very busy schedules allowed them to concentrate fully on their family and children.
On October 6, 2001, they had their first children – a pair of twins named Joseph Raymond (son) and Katherine Bradford (daughter). The couple is largely private and is rarely seen together.
Steven is currently worth about $8 million. He has made most of his wealth from his various acting roles in both television shows and films. The longevity of his career is undoubtedly a major boost to his finances.
Facts About The Actor
Frequent Nose Breaks
Steven Culp broke his nose several times, even on set. While shooting an episode of “J.A.G.”, the script called for Admiral Chegwidden (played by John Jackson) to deliver a mock blow to Steven, which knocked him to the ground; but Jackson went a little too far by giving Culp a real blow that really broke his nose.
He also suffered a broken nose while playing on the set of The Sisters, which was so bad that he had to undergo surgery to get his nose fixed. Sometime in 1991, a robber molested Steven and Barbara in Los Angeles, and his nose was once again the target.
He financially supports the cancer support center weSPARK and the Family Memorial Endowment Fund of Bryan and Kathryn Harvey.
When not on set, Steven enjoys playing guitar, spending time with his wife and kids, writing fiction, and riding his bike to keep fit.
Steven Culp isn’t really one of the biggest guys around, he is 5 feet and 7 inches with dark brown hair and hazel eyes.
