Her health challenges were first noticed one November when she woke up to see a dime sized bloodstain on her pillow. She thought she probably bit her tongue and dismissed it as nothing. A few days passed and the bloodstain happened again, this time even bigger. This continued into December 2016 and it was at this time that Steven discovered that it wasn’t her biting her tongue but rather her tonsil.
They sought medical help and her case was described as squamous cell carcinoma (a type of cancer caused by uncontrolled growth of abnormal squamous cells). Erin began treatment immediately with radiation and chemotherapy but cancer got worse. She soon lost her ability to speak, eat and even drink by the middle of February 2017, despite all these, she remained cheerful. She woke up fine on the 22nd of April 2007 but died in the night of that same day in her sleep while Steven Fleischmann held her hands while also sleeping.
