If anyone had mentioned the name SZA in the same breath as the Grammy awards a few years back, even the soulful singer would have doubted it herself. But fast forward to 2018 and the speed of her career has been so immense that she is the name on everyone’s lips at the Grammys with five nominations, making her the most nominated woman at the prestigious award night.
SZA Bio, Age, Ethnicity
SZA was born in St. Louis, Missouri but was raised in the upper-middle-class suburbs in Maplewood, New Jersey. She has an older half-sister Tiffany Daniels. As with most children born to devout Muslims, she attended conventional schools at day and Muslim prep-school at night.
Born on November 8, 1990, SZA is of African American heritage, though her both parents have different religious beliefs. Her mother is a Christian while her dad is a Muslim. Her real names are Solàna Imani Rowe.
An exceptional student, SZA excelled in the sciences while she attended the famous Columbia High School. As a student, she was an excellent gymnast who took a particular interest in Marine Biology. As a youngster, she was rated as one of the nation’s brightest stars in gymnastics. After leaving Columbia High, she enrolled at Essex County College to study liberal arts.
As a young child, SZA’s musical inclinations were shaped by her fathers’ conservative values which meant she was shielded from the rough and vulgar lyrics of mainstream pop music. This meant she listened to a lot of Ella Fitzgerald and music from her dad’s record collection, which featured a lot of Incognito, Jamiroquai, and Groove Theory.
It is no surprise that her style of music is a genre-blurring fusion of various sounds delivered by her unique and rich vocals. SZA’s journey to professional music began in 2011 when she was introduced to Top Dawg Entertainment, a successful record label that was home to established names such as Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q amongst others.
The following year, on October 29, 2012, SZA self-released her first EP See.SZA.Run. After favorable reviews, in April 2013, SZA dropped her second EP, titled S, which culminated in the release of a music video for the song “Ice Moon”. She was formally signed to Top Dawg Entertainment on July 14, 2013.
SZA issued her critically acclaimed debut album Ctrl in June 2017. The impressive body of work included collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Frank Dukes, and Tyran Donaldson. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B/hip-hop chart. With Ctrl, SZA had made a statement and industry heavyweights were beginning to sit up and take notice of her undeniable talent.
The album also went platinum, raking up five nominations at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Basking in the success of Ctrl, she was featured on the hit single What Lovers Do by Maroon 5. The track reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was SZA’s first top 10 hit as a featured artist.
She also featured alongside Khalid and Post Malone on a remix of Lorde’s Homemade Dynamite. Early in 2018, SZA and Lamar collaborated on the track All the Stars, the soundtrack to the film Black Panther. She also joined Cardi B on her single I Do.
SZA’s musical style has drawn admiration from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Chance The Rapper among others, blessed with the gift of poetry, her sound is oftentimes so fluid that it transcends musical definition. Her sound will be best classified as a fusion of soulful R&B with layers of Jazz and classical folk.
Her sound is heavily influenced by Lauryn Hill, Ella Fitzgerald, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Macy Gray, and Björk.
SZA’s father, Abdul Mubarak-Rowe was a CNN Executive Producer while her mother whose identity remains somewhat vague used to be an Executive at AT&T.
There is very little official information about SZA’s love life but the grapevine has it that she is dating Scott Sasso, CEO of 10. Deep is a streetwear clothing line based in New York.
