For most people, the National Football League has only seen two categories of players; those who would be remembered long after they retire and those destined to struggle against sliding into oblivion throughout their career but eventually embrace the inevitable. Now, Tarik Cohen is arguably, yet to attain such heights that would earn him a place amongst the first group of players, but has definitely shown that he wouldn’t go down as one of the latter guys.

This running back player had an incredible college career which gained for him the attention of prominent teams when he was set to join the National Football League (NFL). He was eventually drafted as the 119th overall pick in the fourth round by the Chicago Bears during the NFL Draft. He’s been proving his worth with The Bears since then. Among other achievements, the 2017 season saw him become the only NFL rookie in recent history to score touchdowns in a season not only through passing and punt return but equally via rushing and receiving. The last time a player (Gale Sayers) pulled off this feat was way back in 1965.

Interestingly, he was also celebrated for being the shortest player since 1934 to throw a touchdown pass, and for pulling off his team’s longest reception. Tarik Cohen was on 26th July 1995 and his place of birth was in Bunn, North Carolina. He was a student of Bunn High School where he first showed that he’s athletically inclined. Cohen didn’t only perform exceptionally at football, he also thrived in track and field which saw him become a team member of North Carolina’s High School Athletic Association for 4×100 meter relay.

Playing football with the school, he emerged as his team’s MVP and was listed among the All-Conference selection. Even though Tarik Cohen was a fantastic playmaker in high school, he only received a scholarship offer from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. This is so as other schools believed his size isn’t ideal for the game. But Cohen was in for clearing major doubts. He embraced the offer from North Carolina A&T, became a member of its Aggies football team, and immediately bagged the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Year award. It was only the beginning as he went on to grab other prestigious accolades.

From 2013 to 2015, he was consecutively listed among All-MEAC First-Team, and from 2014 to 2016, he was named the MEAC offensive player of the Year. Also, he was crowned MEAC All-time leading Rusher in 2016. The year equally saw him receive the Deacon Jones Trophy, named among the Walter Camp FCS All-American and the AFCA FCS Coaches Second Team All-American. In 2015, Tarik won the Black College Football National Championship, became the year’s Celebration Bowl Offensive MVP, got decorated as the SBN/Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year, and whatnot.

As of 2017, Tarik Cohen’s career stats with the NFL stands at 4 touchdowns, 53 receptions, 87 rushing attempts, 353 receiving yards, 370 rushing yards, and 855 return yards.

Because of his name, Cohen, which is said to be a derivation from the Hebrew word for “priest”, it once circulated that this bloke is of Jewish heritage irrespective of the fact that he’s obviously an African-American.

To a large extent, much isn’t known about Tarik’s parents. The only name we have been able to associate with him in this regard is Tilwanda Newell whom we have presumed to be his mother.

From what we learned, growing up was tough for the footballer, he only had his mother and brother. It is said that most of his inspiration comes from his quest to take care of his mom and provide whatever comfort she desires. The woman had a tough time taking care of Tarik and his brother. She moved around with her kids, seeking for better opportunities to raise them in such a way that would hand them a good chance of being successful in their endeavors.
