Although Swinton performed on stage sometimes while in college, her acting career began in 1984 when she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. She was in a long term relationship with her ex-boyfriend – the Scottish artist and playwright John Patrick Byrne. They parted ways in 2003, ending a 14-year-long relationship that started in 1989.

In 2004, Swinton who seems to have a soft spot for artists began a relationship with a younger man, German Artist Sandro Kopp, who is 18 years younger than she is. Tilda met her dark-haired German lover on the set of The Chronicles of Narnia and the two have been seen on several occasions traveling together looking like two giant pieces of very edible cake. The actress has two children, Honor Swinton Byrne, and her Twin Xavier Swinton Byrne, both of whom were fathered by her ex-boyfriend, John Patrick Byrne. The twins were born on October 6, 1997, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London. They were raised in the Scottish Highlands, specifically Nairn, by both their parents until the couple’s relationship packed up.

However, Byrne and Tilda remain friends and together they raise their children even though he has also moved on and now lives with his partner Jeanine in Edinburgh. Swinton however, shares a home with her young lover in Nairn, where they live with her children.

1. Tilda’s family, Swinton, along with two other families, the Ardens and the Berkeleys, are the only British families that can still trace their lineage back to before the 11th century.
