He returned to Broadway after that to appear in Abe Burrows’ Four on a Garden before landing the role of Dr. Mark Toland on the ABC soap opera, One Life to Live (1971-1975). In the following years, he starred in movies like Jackson County Jail (1976), Rolling Thunder (1977), The Amazing Howard Hughes (1977), The Betsy (1978) among others.

Jones earned his first Golden Globe nomination in 1980 for his performance in the biographical film Coal Miner’s Daughter. Three years later, he received an Emmy Award for his performance in The Executioner’s Song (1983). By the late 80s and all through the 90s, Jones became one of the most sort after actors in Hollywood, and one of the best paid too, as he starred in blockbusters like The Fugitive (1993), which he won a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Batman Forever (1995), and Men In Black (1997), the first installment of the film series.

Jones’ first marriage was in 1971 to actress Kate Lardner, the daughter of screenwriter and journalist Ring Lardner Jr. The pair were together until 1978 when they divorced. In 1981, he married Kimberlea Cloughley, the daughter of the former mayor of San Antonio, Phil Hardberger. The couple’s marriage lasted until 1996, during which they had two children; Austin Leonard who was born in 1982 and Victoria Kafka who was born in 1991.
