Born Valerie Anne Bertinelli on April 23, 1960, in Wilmington, Delaware, she was raised alongside her siblings by her Roman Catholic parents, Andrew Bertinelli and Nancy Carvin. She has three younger brothers which would have been four (including an elder brother, Mark if he didn’t die before she was born). Her brothers include David, Patrick, and Drew Bertinelli. Her father Andrew, worked at General Motors as an executive and is of Italian descent while her mother, Nancy, is of English descent. They moved around a lot while growing up because of the nature of her father’s job. They lived in places such as Michigan, Claymont, Delaware, Oklahoma city,  Clarkston, Louisiana, Shreveport, and Los Angeles. Her academic progression was severely affected by the frequent movement as she attended Granada Hills High School but did not complete her high school education. She went on to the Tami Lynn School of Artists where she studied acting.

Valerie began her career with an appearance in the TV series, Apple’s Way and after that, she was invited to audition for a role in the 1970’s sitcom, One Day At A Time when she was just 15 years old. The show was aired between 1975 and 1984 before it went off air. Bertinelli, at some point, became obese but lost about 50 lbs (23kg) in March 2009 after which she became a weight-loss activist and participated in the Jenny Craig weight loss program and adverts. She released two books in 2008 and 2009 respectively titled Losing it: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound At A Time and Finding It: And Satisfying My Hunger For Life Without Opening The Fridge. The books described her journey through her struggles with overweight. She has her own food show called Valerie’s Home Cooking which she started in 2015 and which is beamed live on the Food Network along with the popular kids’ baking show with cake artist, Duff Goldman.

Their marriage didn’t last as they had issues and were separated in 2001 before finally getting their divorce process completed on December 20, 2007. Eddie Van Halen was born January 26, 1955, in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He is a Dutch-American musician, songwriter, and producer. Eddie belongs to the American hard rock band called Van Halen. The band was founded by his brother, Alex Van Halen and he is the main songwriter of the group. Other members of the band include David Lee Roth, the lead singer, and Micheal Anthony who is the bassist.

While they (Eddie and Valerie) were separated, Valerie started dating her would-be second husband, Tom Vitale, who is a financial planner.
