What Happened To F(x)? Have They Disbanded Or Are They Back Together?

Due to the massive success recorded in their active days, people often wonder what happened to F(x) and what the members have been up to lately? F(x) was one of South Korea’s most successful girl groups from the late 2000s. Famed for their powerful and sometimes controversial style, the group gained international recognition quickly with successful hit studio albums like Pinocchio (2011), Pink Tape (2013) Red Light (2014) and 4 Walls (2015).

Signed under SM Entertainment with their debut coming in 2009, the group has won several awards to include the 2015 Global Fans Choice Awards and Golden Disc Awards. By 2017, however, F(x) was making little active group appearances, leading to speculations about their disbandment. Here is the truth about what happened to F(x).

Who Are The F(x) Members?

F(x) has a four-member lineup consisting of Victoria, Amber, Luna and Krystal, a fifth member was Sulli who left in 2015. Here is a brief profile of each groupmate and what has happened to them.

Victoria

Victoria was F(x) group leader, dancer and rapper. Born Song Qian in Shandong, China, on February 2, 1987, Victoria has always dreamed of F(x) running their trade in China. Best known for her traditional and jazz dance style, Victoria is the third F(x) member to have released a solo album.

She was cast during SM Beijing Auditions in 2007, appearing in videos of fellow SM stars in the boy bands – Super Junior and SHINee. She also starred in movies like Ice Fantasy, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Wished. Victoria is energetic, loves dancing and was the group’s cook. She hasn’t renewed her contract with SM Entertainment since it expired in September 2019.

Amber

Nicknamed Llama by her friends and close pals, the American/Taiwanese Liu Yi Yun was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up with an older sister, Jackie. Among other things, her tomboy nature was distinct in the group and when she was younger in the US, she was constantly mistaken for a boy.

Amber was cast during SM’s L.A Auditions in 2007. As part of F(x), she was the group’s rapper and vocalist. She didn’t renew her contract with SM and is currently signed to Steel Wool Entertainment, USA.

Luna

Luna’s birth name is Park Sun Young. She was born on August 12, 1993, in Seoul. She has a twin and an older brother and was discovered by SM in 2006 after appearing on the reality show “Truth Game”. Luna is passionate about singing since her early years but she’s also appeared in several TV shows and movies, including Cinderella’s Sister and Legally Blonde. In F(x), she was the main vocalist owing to her great voice. Her contract with SM expired on September 5th and she didn’t renew.

Krystal

Chrystal Soo Jung was the face of F(x) and lead vocalist. She was cast in 2000 while on a visit to Korea. Her older sister Jessica is a former Girls’ Generation member. Krystal was born in San Francisco, USA, on October 24, 1994, to a gymnast mother and pugilist father. She has acted in multiple dramas like The Legend Of The Blue Sea and The Player (2018). Krystal loves cooking and is the only F(x) member who hasn’t released a solo album. At 5’5″ tall, she was the second tallest group member. She’s still with SM Entertainment.

Sulli

Before leaving F(x) in 2015 to pursue acting, Choi Jin Ri (Sulli) was the group’s lead rapper, vocalist and face of the band. She was born in Gyeongsang and had three brothers. Sulli was discovered by SM in 2005 after appearing in The Ballad Of SeoDong. She was the tallest group member at 5’7″ and was Victoria’s roommate.

On 14th October 2019, Sulli was sadly found dead in her home in Seongnam. Her death was attributed to suicide as a result of cyberbullying. All SM artists have cancelled tours and promos to pay their respect.

Have F(x) Disbanded Or Are They Back Together?

Following speculations about the future of the girl band, It appears that as of 2018, the F(x) group members were still together, although they were all busy with their solo activities since the release of their last song “4 Walls”.

In September 2019, the contracts of Victoria, Amber and Luna with SM Entertainment expired. All three decided not to renew, leaving the status of F(x) unknown. There have been no official statements from SM on the matter as no member has made an official departure. For now, we can’t conclude on what lies ahead for the group.

  • F(x) was the first Kpop band to perform in the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
  • Their 2011 single “Hot Summer” became Korea’s most successful single, selling 2.9 million copies.
  • In August 2019, the group reunited briefly for a 3-night Tokyo performance. Victoria was absent.
