When Will Season 5 Of Mr Robot Return Or Is It Going To Be Cancelled?

The USA tech thriller, Mr Robot brought something different to the table, blowing viewers away. The Emmy award-winning series helped the network to change their shows narrative which had made most of their past dramas a running joke in pop culture. It slammed the door on its blue skies era and opened to adding more tensions to its programming. With a plot targeted at millennials, the series follows Oscar winner, as the likable but volatile hacker hero, Elliot Alderson.

Upon release in May 2015, Mr Robot averaged about 2.8 million viewers in its first season, sweeping remarks from critics and reviewers, who applauded it for its plot, direction, use of realistic exploits, and cast especially Malek. Also, with an approval rating of 98% and a weighted average rating of 8.36, the show quickly became a hit. The success of the first outing further sparked the quest for follow up seasons.

With season 4 now airing, fans are eager to know if the series will return for a fifth season or has it been canceled.

About the “Mr Robot” Series

Mr Robot is a cyber-thriller with striking visuals and bold narrative that perfectly blends reality and fantasy. Set in New York City, it follows Elliot, a cybersecurity engineer with an anxiety disorder. As a way of dealing with his disorder, he connects with people by hacking them. He is eventually recruited by the titular character and his anarchist team of hackers ‘fsociety’.

The series was created by Sam Esmail and premiered via online and video-on-demand services on May 27, 2015. Mr Robot was renewed for a second season even before the first season premiered on USA Network on June 24th, 2015. A 12-episode season 2, two more than the former premiered on July 13, 2016.

On October 11, 2017, 10-episode third season debuted and the series was renewed for a fourth on December 13, 2017. Mr Robot returned for one last hack, with 13 episodes on the 6th of October 2019, after a two-year absence. Its plot, cast, presentation have won the show many awards including two Golden Globes for Best Television Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor for Christian Slater and an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Malek, amidst other nominations.

The Fourth Season

Season 4 has longer episodes than the previous seasons which Esmail described as very fascinating. He added that they had to make it so as a way of the story letting us know it was time to end.

Set during the 2015 Christmas holidays, season 4 carried on the theme of reconciliation from the end of season 3 which has its main theme as disintegration between Elliot and Mr Robot. It will see their relationship deepen. We also got to discover in the final season that Whiterose (BD Wong) is the puppet master, the one the series set out to take down from the beginning. Now we know who the main target is, season four will feature a final showdown between Elliot and Whiterose as well.

Will There Be Mr Robot Season 5?

After four explosive seasons, Sam Esmail’s acclaimed hacker drama, Mr Robot was finally ready to log off. Before the fourth season premiered, it was confirmed in August 2018 that it would be the final run. So, it somehow didn’t come as a surprise to most even though many would still love the show to continue, and possibly never end.

Although Mr Robot came in hot when it premiered in 2015, becoming a pop culture phenomenon and gaining critical acclaim, it received a 0.13 rating for its fourth season premiere. Of course, this is a far cry from the previous season opener which received a .22 rating. Moreover, it also netted approximately 440,000 viewers on its debut which is another dip from the third season. Season 3 had nearly 680,000 viewers.

If the ratings and viewership are anything to go by, it means that not just Mr Robot but audiences are ready to say their goodbyes. Their decision could also be from the show’s two-year absence which was too long a hiatus for them to notice that it came back. No wonder Mr Robot returned to a very, very lukewarm, almost cold reception. Furthermore, the move from Wednesday to Sunday could have possibly worked against the series as it went up against other acclaimed shows such as . Whatever be the case, that there will be no Mr Robot season 5 remains the indisputable given.
