If you are familiar with the Van Wilder movies, you are less likely to think it is a story inspired by the life of one man. Its outrageousness was simply a magnitude reserved for fiction, or so we thought. The Van Wilder story was actually inspired by the life of Bert Kreischer. He has grown up to become an actor and a stand-up comedian but when he was in college, he had a 6-page article about him by Rolling Stone magazine as the number one partier in the entire country. Currently, he may be a responsible man who fits into the larger society’s definition of a mature man with a wife and two kids but Bert wasn’t always that guy. He was for a period in his life, a man-child, as described by a book he wrote about his life in 2014. Bert was born to a respectable family of a father who was a real estate attorney and a mother who specialized in early childhood development. His birth took place on November 3, 1965.
As a somewhat rich family, he was sent to a private school called Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida where he did most of his growing up. After high school, he got an admission into the college that would define his life, the Florida State University. He attended the school as an English major on paper but chose parties as his real major. He became a party animal and was a member of the fraternity group, Alpha Tau Omega.
In a recognition that is certainly a contribution of Bert Kreischer, Florida State was officially named the number one party school in the entire United States, when Bert was in the sixth year of a traditional 4 year course. Recognizing the man who had led the school to the summit of college partying, Rolling Stone did a feature on Bert Kreischer, looking to understand the life and mind of the top partier in the country.
The story which was published nationwide gained the interest of many, including movie director Olivia Stone. A man quick to see the business side of a great story, he moved to buy the rights to Kreischer’s life story and proceeded to work on developing a movie out of it. Unfortunately, it failed to come to fruition. The protagonist name was however changed by one of the rights and shopped to different production outlets. National Lampoon bought the script to Kreischer’s life story, even though his name was no longer a feature of the story. His name was replaced with Van Wilder and thus, he became the inspiration for the Van Wilder movies.
After Bert Kreischer eventually graduated from college, he sought a career in stand up comedy. His first experience as a stand-up comedian was in Tallahassee, Florida. After a short stint in Florida as a comedian, he moved to New York City.
Since moving to New York City, he has grown as a stand-up comedian, performing in various comedy clubs and for different television shows. Kreischer’s act involves him being shirtless and his nickname is ‘the machine’.
Now an international comedian, Bert has comedy specials and has performed on top shows like Live and the Late Show with David Letterman.
