Aloe Blacc is one of those artists whose fans wish he would never gain a mainstream following in order for him not to go pop and lose the aspects of his music that attracted them to him in the first place. For those that do not know him, the talented multi-genre musician and songwriter is better identified by his chart-topping songs “I Need a Dollar” and “The Man”. Who is Aloe Blacc?

Aloe Blacc got his musical calling at a very early age, after having learned how to play the trumpet. Around fourth grade, the young aspiring musician got exposed to music by and fell in love with it. He has said that the rapper’s work was a major factor in his decision to pursue a career in music.

At around the age of 16, Blacc joined forces with hip-hop music producer Exile, and the two formed the rap duo, Emanon, which is the word “no name” spelled backward. Emanon gained a following in the indie rap underground scene after releasing their first work titled Imaginary Friends in 1996. In 1999, the duo followed their debut work with an extended play (EP) titled Acid 9. Emanon released two more recordings; Steps Through Time (2001) and Imaginary Friends (2002) before Blacc decided to launch a solo career in 2003, although he and Exile continued to work together, releasing a third album, The Waiting Room in 2005, and recording a fourth one which was not released.

In 2006, after having released two solo EPs; The Aloe Blacc EP (2003) and The Aloe Blacc EP 2: Me and My Music (2004), Blacc landed a record deal with Stones Throw Records and released his first full-length album titled Shine Through (2006), which received significant local and international media attention to launch him to greater heights.

He is of Panamanian Origin

Aloe Blacc, who was born Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III on the 7th of January, 1979, in Laguna Hills, California, U.S, is of Panamanian descent through his parents. Other than that his father was in the U.S. military, not much is known about his parents, who according to Blacc, were the ultimate example of people who went from rags to riches, having come from a very poor background in their home country.

He is a College Graduate

While harboring hopes and attempting to make it big in the music industry, Aloe Blacc, who was a straight-A high school student and attended the University of Southern California on a scholarship. He graduated from the university in 2001 as a Renaissance Scholar, which he achieved by majoring in two widely separated fields of study; Linguistics and Psychology, and graduating with a 3.5 or higher overall GPA.

He is Married

Aloe Blacc is happily married to rapper and radio personality, Maya Jupiter. It is not clear when the pair became an item, however, they were said to have met when Jupiter moved to Los Angeles from Australia to further her solo music career. In 2013, the couple welcomed their first child together, a daughter.

Mrs. Blacc, who was born in Mexico to a Mexican father and Turkish mother, was raised in Australia. She is a former member of the Australian hip-hop group, Foreign Heights, and between 2004 and 2008, she hosted a weekly Hip-Hop Show on the Australian national radio station, Triple J’s.

He Is a Grammy Award Nominated Artist

Aloe Blacc can proudly say he has been nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2015, his album, Lift Your Spirit, was nominated in the Best R&B Album category at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. He, however, lost to the collaborative album by and titled Love, Marriage & Divorce.

In addition to his Grammy nomination, Blacc has also received two Brit Award nominations (2012), a Soul Train Award nomination (2011), and a BET Awards nomination (2014).

Aloe Blacc is very keen on giving back to the less privileged. He has for a long time been closely connected and involved with the non-profit organization, Malaria No More, which seeks to end malaria deaths in Africa by providing education about the disease to families across the continent while delivering life-saving tools and other assistance to the most affected areas.
