Active on stage, TV, and film, Bill Pullman is an American veteran actor who has been in the industry since the mid-80s. Some of his notable films include; Ruthless People, Spaceballs, and While You Were Sleeping. In recent years, Pullman is best recognized for his role as Detective Harry Ambrose in the USA Network TV series, The Sinner. For his recurring role as Oswald Danes in Torchwood: Miracle Day, Pullman received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor on Television.

The American actor was born William James Pullman on the 17th of December 1953, in Hornell, New York. He is one of the 7 children of James Pullman and Johanna (née Blaas). Both his parents work in the medical field, his dad being a physician and his mother a nurse. Pullman had wanted to become a construction engineer but in college, he fell in love with theatre. He taught theatre for a while before he dabbled into stage work following encouragement from his students.
Pullman acted in a number of stage productions in New York before making his screen debut in the 1986 film, Ruthless People. While acting in films and TV shows, Pullman remained loyal to his theatre roots. He received critical acclaim for his role in Edward Albee’s Broadway play, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? which ran for a year from 2001 to 2002.
Bill Pulman is also a creative writer and has penned plays as much as he acted in theatres. He owns a production company called, Big Town. Pullman has had a dulled sense of smell since the age of 21 when he went into a deep coma after falling off a ladder in college. The actor stands at a height of 6 feet 1 inch tall.
Bill Pullman’s education began in his native Hornell New York where he attended Hornell High School, graduating in 1971. Almost immediately, he enrolled at the State University of New York at Delhi – a technology-oriented school where he had hoped to pursue a degree in construction engineering.
However, after falling in love with performing arts, Pullman transferred to the State University of New York at Oneonta where he would earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre in 1975. Pullman holds a master’s degree in directing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
With hopes to study to the professorship level, Bill Pullman began teaching theatre at Montana State University’s School of Film and Photography. He would later receive an honorary doctorate degree from Alfred University, Western New York (of which he is one of the board members) on the 14th of May 2011.

The actor is often mistaken for Bill Paxton with whom he shares a little resemblance, thus, when Paxton passed away on February 25, 2017, many wrongfully thought it was Bill Pullman. Paxton had died from complications from a heart surgery he had on 14th February. The Texas native was known for his action film roles in The Terminator (1984), Weird Science (1985), and True Lies (1994). He played Brock Lovett in the 1997’s iconic romantic film, Titanic.
Bill Pullman is married to Tamara Hurwitz. She is a modern dancer and is of Norwegian descent. The couple tied the knot in 1987 and have remained together since. They acted together in the theatrical dance piece, Healing Wars which showed at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage in June 2014.
Pullman and his wife are very committed to community work. They have organized square dances whose proceeds go back into helping society. They run the Hollywood Orchard Foundation, a community initiative aimed at donating surplus fruits from people’s trees to those in need. The progress of the foundation was featured in their documentary, The Fruit Hunters.
Pullman and his wife are blessed with three children they include sons; Lewis Pullman, and Jack Pullman, as well as a daughter, Maesa Pullman. The couple passed on a generous amount of their artistic genes to their kids. Maesa is a singer-songwriter while Lewis, the older child who was born on the 29th of January, 1993, is an actor. He has built quite a resume for himself. Some of his notable films include; Battle of the Sexes, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and Bad Times at the El Royale.
