He was named the 73rd-best prospect by Baseball America prior to the 2014 season of which he started with the Portland Sea Dogs of the Class AA Eastern League. In August of that same year, he was again promoted to the Pawtucket Red Sox of the Class AAA International League as he was the second, highest-ranked prospect in the Red Sox team.

Swihart recorded his first major league hit against the New York Yankees after he was called up to join the big leagues for the first time on May 2, 2015. He became the team’s youngest catcher to hit a home run since 1982.
