The award-winning actor was born Stuart Bruce Greenwood in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada on 12th August 1956. He is the son of geophysicist, Hugh John Greenwood, who was a Princeton University Professor and Mary Sylvia, who worked as a nurse in the extended care unit. He has two younger siblings; sisters named Lynn and Kelly, who work as an activist and a nurse, respectively.

As a result of his father’s job, Bruce Greenwood never resided in an area for more than four years during his childhood. After his birth in Quebec, his family moved to Princeton, New Jersey. They later relocated to Maryland and then Washington D.C. However, at the age of eleven, his family moved back to Canada, where he mostly had his childhood experiences.

His family’s constant movement caused Greenwood to attend many schools. He completed his middle school in Bethesda, Maryland, and his high school in Zurich, Switzerland. Albeit, he partly attended Magee Secondary School in Vancouver. Upon completion of his basic education, he enrolled at the University of British Columbia, where he studied Philosophy and Economics. Bruce first gained prominence through his role as Dr. Seth Griffin in TV series, St. Elsewhere (1986-1988).

He further scored more roles in Thick as Thieves, Disturbing Behavior, The Lost Son, and Double Jeopardy. The latter earned him a Blockbuster Entertainment Award nomination for Favorite Supporting Actor.
