Chad Mendes has had some controversies in his life such as when he was charged with battery. It was alleged that he was involved in a bar fight that took place on July 29, 2012, in his hometown Hanford, California. The charges were brought by The Kings County District Attorney’s office but were later dropped after Mendes pleaded no contest to a count of public disturbance and was asked to pay a fine which he did.

Another controversy was when the UFC announced that Chad Mendes had been informed of a potential doping violation conducted by the USADA on June 10, 2016. He tested positive for a banned substance called GHRP-6 which is said to be a growth hormone peptide. According to Chad, the substance containing the GHRP-6 was a cream that he used to treat plaque psoriasis, a skin condition he had been battling for years.

This accusation resulted in his being suspended for two years by the USADA which meant Mendes was not eligible to compete until June 10, 2018. He reacted by accepting the ban and saying it was his fault since he did not study well enough or carry out proper research on the lubricant before he applied it.
