He was born to Toini Norman and her husband Mervin Norman who worked as an electrical engineer. He completed his basic education at Townsville Grammar School and Aspley State High School, Brisbane.
When he was fifteen, the young Greg started playing golf. He became a caddy for his mother who played golf at the Virginia Golf Club in Brisbane at the time.
