Hedrick of Polish, Hungarian, Siberian and German descent working as a building contractor-realtor, and her Siberian, English, and Native American mum Lillian Grayson Hedrick lived from 1897 to 1955. The name Kathryn Grayson was just a stage name that she got from a combination of her middle name and her mum’s middle name but her given name at birth was Zelma Kathryn Elisabeth Hedrick.

She grew up alongside siblings who also had proficiency in singing as both her older brother Michael Butler and younger sister Frances Raeburn appeared with her in the 1942 movie Seven Sweethearts.
