The country singer was raised in Asheville, North Carolina though he was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 8, 1990, and named Luke Albert Combs. He attended A. C. Reynolds High School. As a child, he discovered his talent for vocals and took joy in singing. While in high school, Combs split his time between football and singing in various local groups as well as in the church choir, long before he became a country superstar. He also had a solo performance in the world-renowned concert venue, Carnegie Hall.
At Appalachian State University, he picked up the guitar and added songwriting to his resume. He also played his first country music show at the Parthenon Cafe. However, towards the end of his studies, his interest in music trumped over school activities and he dropped out to pursue his dreams. With that decision, he soon left for Nashville, Tennessee and since then, his career has only blossomed, with him, hitting a slew of professional milestones.
In 2014, he released two EPs, The Way She Rides in February and Can I Get an Outlaw later in the year. His first single, Hurricane (2015) became a hit. It sold 15,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number 46 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart as well as certified platinum. The single was re-released on Columbia Nashville and set country history, topping the country radio airplay charts on May 15, 2017, a spot it held for two consecutive weeks.
This One’s for You, Combs’ third EP, came in November 2015. Soon after, Luke Combs released his debut album also named This One’s for You in June 2017 on Columbia Nashville and River House Artists. The album became an instant hit. It reached number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and number five on the US Billboard 200 in its first week. Also, it’s single, When It Rains It Pours topped the Country Airplay chart in October 2017, two months after its release to country radio, and was also platinum-certified. He released his third single, One Number Away in January 2018 while She Got the Best of Me and Beautiful Crazy were issued as singles after the album was re-released in mid-2018.
Through the course of his career, Luke Combs has won over the hearts of fans and earned the recognition of many award bodies. He has been nominated by CMT, ACM and in December 2018, he was announced as one of the nominees in the Best New Artist category by the Grammy. He won iHeartRadio New Country Artist of the Year as well as the Country Music Association New Artist of the Year Awards in 2018.
