Prior to her appearance in the film Roma (2018), Marina De Tavira was probably not known by anybody outside of Mexico as she mainly featured in theatre and film productions in the county. Her performance in the film has now earned her an Academy Award nomination and put her a step closer to being named among the likes of , José Ferrer, Anthony Quinn, Mercedes Ruehl, and Benicio del Toro, who are the only Latino actors to have won the award.

Who Is Marina De Tavira?

In the Mexican theatre/stage acting scene, there are very few people that are more known than Marina De Tavira. The actress, who has enjoyed a good working relationship with some of the country’s most prestigious directors, received her acting education at the La Conchita theatre school in Coyoacán as well as the Theatre Studies Centre and the San Cayetano Theatre Formation Centre.

After graduating from school, she joined the National Theatre Company and the Línea de Sombra theatre where she continued to work as she went on to become an acting teacher at the Casa de Teatro. By the late 90s and early 2000s, she had co-founded the Incidente Teatro productions as she went ahead to make a slow transition to film acting, appearing in films like Side Effects (2006), The Zone (2007), and Love, Pain and Vice Versa (2008).

In recent time, she has played the recurring role of Patricia Lieberman in the Netflix series Ingobernable and that of Carolina in the Amazon series, Falco.

1. Her father was murdered

Marina De Tavira’s father, Juan Pablo de Tavira, was a prominent criminal attorney in Mexico before he was mysteriously murdered. Details surrounding his death are not available and, the crime has till today not been solved by the police. His killer is still not known.

2. She’s late Mexican billionaire, Lorenzo Servitje’s Granddaughter

Lorenzo Servitje was Marina De Tavira’s maternal grandfather. She is one of the business magnate’s twenty-four grandchildren from his eight children.

Servitje, who was raised by Catalonian/Spanish immigrant parents, made his fortune by co-founding the Mexican multinational bakery product manufacturing company, Grupo Bimbo. Being the son of a professional baker, he is credited with expanding Grupo Bimbo from a small company to a multinational conglomerate. He served as the company’s president from 1945 to 1981 and remained chairman of its board of directors until 1994 before giving way to his son, Daniel Servitje Montull, who currently serves as Chairman and CEO of the company.

3. Awards and nominations

Back in her home country of Mexico, Marina De Tavira has been nominated and awarded with various accolades from theatre critics and journalist associations. In January 2019, she was able to add Academy Award nominee to her list of achievements as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) nominated her for Best Supporting Actress; this was for her performance in the Alfonso Cuaron film, Roma (2018).

4. She’s from an entertainment inclined family

Marina De Tavira is not the only member of her family that is making a living from the film industry. Her uncle is actor and theatre director Luis de Tavira, who is known for his work on Mujer, Casos de la Vida real (1985), Vintage Model (1992), and Serpientes y escaleras (1992). Luis de Tavira’s ex-wife, Rosa María Bianchi, is also a notable film and telenovela actress. In 2004, the Argentine-born Mexican woman won the Ariel Award, which is the highest film award in Mexico. The honor was in recognition of her performance in the film Nicotina (2003).

Luis de Tavira and Rosa María Bianchi’s two sons, Jose Maria de Tavira and Julian de Tavira, who are Marina’s cousins, are also making a name for themselves in the industry. Jose Maria is an actor and director who is known for his work in Mask of Zorro (1998), 100 Metros (2008), and The Oasis (2014). Julian, on the other hand, is a director who is known for his work on Sr. Ávila (2013), Juana Inés (2016), and Falco (2018).

In Mexico, where the average height of an adult female is said to be about 5 feet 2 inch (1.58 m), Marina De Tavira will most likely be the tallest person in any room she walks into, thanks to her impressive height of 5 feet 7 inches (1.68 m).
